Another traffic shift on I-64 in Newport News is part of express lane project

Interstate 64 near the J. Clyde Morris Boulevard interchange will undergo another traffic shakeup that will last through late 2025.

Starting this week, the right lane on I-64 west from just before exits 258A and 258B will be closed, shrinking this portion of the highway from four lanes to three but with no effect to the exit ramps themselves, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. The right lane for I-64 east will close as early as Oct. 5.

This will allow for construction crews to complete the final phase of rehabilitation of the bridge that passes over J. Clyde Morris Boulevard, which is a part of the Hampton Roads Express Lane Newport News Segment project.

Since early August, traffic on this segment of I-64 has been split, with only the two left-most lanes and the right lane of the east and west directions being open.

“Motorists are reminded to use caution when traveling near work zones, obey posted speed limits, follow lane markings and barrier guides, be alert to digital message signs and drive distraction-free,” VDOT said in a news release.

The HREL Newport News segment is 11.5 miles of the overall 45-mile, high-occupancy express lane network that will stretch from I-64 near Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News to the Interstate-264/664 interchange in Chesapeake.
