The Baltimore Ravens have ruled two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson out for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears. The Ravens signed practice squad quarterback Tyler Huntley to the 53-man roster and the expectation is that Huntley will start.
The Ravens initially said that Jackson was a full participant in Friday’s practice, but on Saturday, they downgraded his Friday practice status to limited and ruled him out for the game. This will be the third consecutive game that Jackson has missed since injuring his hamstring in late September.
Backup quarterback Cooper Rush started each of the two games for the Ravens with Jackson sidelined. After Rush threw four interceptions over two games, the Ravens made a change to Huntley to finish out a Week 6 loss against the Los Angeles Rams.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh said this week that Huntley was now the second quarterback on the depth chart ahead of Rush. Huntley is now in line to start Sunday.
Huntley has started 14 NFL games, including five last year for the Miami Dolphins. He started the last time the Bears and Ravens squared off in 2021, leading Baltimore to a 16-13 win at Soldier Field. Andy Dalton started at QB for the Bears that day.
Jackson’s status was unclear all week. The Ravens are coming off a bye week and Jackson was back on the practice field, which made it seem as if he might be trending toward playing. The Bears prepared this week as if Jackson was playing.
“We’ll approach it that he’s starting for them,” Bears coach Ben Johnson said Wednesday. “That’s our starting point.”
Baltimore has a quick turnaround this week with a Thursday night matchup against the Dolphins looming, which possibly played a part in Baltimore’s decision.
With a 1-5 record entering Sunday’s game against the Bears, the Ravens are pinning their hopes on Huntley in what might be a must-win game for their playoff chances.
