Barry Manilow postpones Norfolk show after lung surgery

Barry Manilow has postponed the first leg of his upcoming farewell tour — including a March 2 show in Norfolk, intended to be his last in Hampton Roads — after a “very depressing visit” with his surgeon amid his battle against early-stage lung cancer.
Manilow, who is 82, said Friday on social media that despite taking to his treadmill three times a day, he still could not sing “more than three songs in a row” before having to stop.
He had thought he’d be well enough to perform his upcoming arena shows, but his medical team shut that down.

Manilow, who announced his diagnosis in December, said his surgeon “shook his head” before telling him that his lungs just “aren’t ready yet.” Though the surgeon said Manilow is in “great shape considering” the cancer diagnosis, he warned him against doing “the first arena shows”: “You won’t make it through.”
Manilow said he would reschedule his performances set for Feb. 27 through March 17. He hopes he’ll be able to continue with the rest of the tour, called “The Last Concerts,” in April.

He previously canceled a series of January concert dates as well as a residency at Westgate Las Vegas, which was set to run from Feb. 12 through 21. He had announced the addition of the Norfolk show, at Chartway Arena, and five others in mid-January.

A star of the adult contemporary genre, Manilow has released over 40 albums, sold more than 85 million albums and had over 50 Top 40 singles over a five-decade career in music. His classics include “Copacabana (At the Copa),” “Mandy,” “I Write the Songs,” “Looks Like We Made It” and “Can’t Smile Without You”; he recently released a music video for his new single “Once Before I Go.”
