Berry beats CNU in regional final at VWU

Berry won the NCAA regional at Virginia Wesleyan’s TowneBank Arena, defeating Christopher Newport 3-1 (25-23, 25-15, 14-25, 25-15) Saturday to advance to the Division III quarterfinals.

The Captains, who knocked out three-time defending NCAA champion Juniata on Friday, finished 26-8. Berry, from Rome, Georgia, coached by former CNU All-American Bailey (Jensen) Moriarty, improved to 27-7. The Vikings entered the tournament ranked 16th in the coaches’ poll, while CNU was 29th.

Alyssa Dozier had 18 kills and Emmy Carpenedo 14 kills and 10 digs for CNU. Fielding Croft had 43 assists, and Maddie Hanes made 20 digs. For Berry, Madie Whitehead had 16 kills and Keira Kruk had 13 kills and nine digs. Kruk is former major league first baseman John Kruk’s daughter.

UVA men’s tandem reaches NCAA final

Virginia senior Mans Dahlberg and junior Dylan Dietrich captured a spot in the NCAA men’s doubles championship match at the USTA National Campus near Orlando, Florida.

They zoomed past Florida’s Tanapatt Nirundorn and Henry Jefferson 6-1, 6-4 in a semifinal Saturday and will play for the title at 12:30 p.m. Sunday against Ohio State’s Nikita Filin and Brandon Carpico, who ousted Penn’s Aaron Sandler and Manfredi Graziani 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. There were eight seeded teams among the 32 in the bracket, but none of them advanced to the semifinals.

Earlier in the event, Dahlberg and Dietrich handled Oklahoma’s Johan Alexander Rodriguez and Orel Kimhi 6-3, 6-1, top-seeded Benito Sanchez Martinez Petar Jovanovic of Mississippi State 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) and Ohio State’s Aidan Kim and Bryce Nakashima 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-5). Kim and Nakashima were seeded in the 5-8 group.

Apprentice’s Lucas Vannostrand wins title in Georgia

The Apprentice School men’s team wrapped up action in the Lucha Open at Powder Springs, Georgia, with four wrestlers finishing on the podium.

Lucas Vannostrand won the 125-pound title in the Silver Division. The Princess Anne High graduate beat five opponents, culminating with a 20-5 win over Keiser’s Gunner Musilunas in the championship bout.

DJ Wince was the runner-up at 157, Ethan Vannostrand (Lucas’ brother) was fifth at 133, and Tabb High graduate DJ Uribes was eighth at 285.
