Blizzard warning issued for Eastern Shore as snow storm approaches

Hampton Roads is forecast to get more snow by Monday morning.

Areas on the Peninsula are likely to see up to 3 inches beginning late Sunday night, with Williamsburg likely to see more of the white stuff than Hampton and Newport News, according to the latest briefing from the National Weather Service in Wakefield.

Norfolk, Portsmouth and northern areas of Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Suffolk likely will see 1-2 inches of snow. Southern areas of those cities could see up to an inch.

Rain is expected to continue Sunday throughout the region, but snow will begin falling late Sunday. Snowfall could start on the Peninsula in the late afternoon.

A winter storm warning has been issued for northern areas: James City County, York County, King William County and New Kent.

A blizzard warning has been issued for the Eastern Shore beginning at 1 p.m. due to high winds and heavy snow. More than 15 inches of snow is expected on the Maryland side of the Shore, while the southern areas are more likely to see 5-8 inches. Winds are expected to be as high as 45-50 mph, with gusts reaching 55 mph along the coast.

Norfolk is most likely to see 1-2 inches of snow, but there is a small chance for 4 inches or more.

Temperatures are expected to fall into the 20s Monday night, which could cause refreezing and impact Tuesday’s commute, the weather service warned.

Tidal flooding is expected to have minor impacts across vulnerable locations.
