BLOOMFIELD – The last time Ansonia and Bloomfield faced each other was the last game of last season in the Class S state championship.
Ansonia dominated in that game and Bloomfield had all of its off-season to think about it. And in the first game of the season Thursday night, the Warhawks had a chance to avenge that loss, playing Ansonia for the first time at Bloomfield.
But Bloomfield fell in a close game, 23-14.
Ansonia, who has played Bloomfield eight times in the state championship game, won the matchup last year, 58-12 and had beaten the Warhawks in a close game for the title in 2022.
Daniel Ayala scored what proved to be the game winner on a 51-yard TD pass on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Chargers scored on a safety late in the fourth quarter.

Ansonia scored first on a 4-yard run by Crishon Fogle with 4:37 left in the first quarter and the PAT gave the Chargers a 7-0 lead.
But Bloomfield got on the board with a 51-yard run by Romar Heron. The conversion failed and the Warhawks trailed 7-6 with 9:55 left in the half.
Ansonia marched down the field on the next series, and after eight plays, the Chargers scored on a 1-yard run by Javier Figuroa. The kick was good and Ansonia led 14-6. Bloomfield tied the score at 14 on a 60-yard run by Cameron White on the second play of the third quarter and had a two-point conversion.
Bloomfield senior Zion Banton was injured with eight minutes to go in the game and was taken off the field on a stretcher. Bloomfield coach Ty Outlaw said after the game that Banton was in concussion protocol.
