NEWPORT NEWS — U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott and Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi will host a panel this week to outline constitutional rights when interacting with federal immigration authorities.
Scott, a Democrat representing Virginia’s 3rd congressional district, is convening a Know-Your-Rights panel at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Hampton. The event in the Peninsula Community College Workforce Development Center at 600 Butler Farm Rd. is open to the public. Local attorney Rebecca Winn will join the discussion.
The panel is intended to help inform the public on how to recognize abusive immigration enforcement tactics from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, agents. It comes amid the federal administration deploying a surge of ICE agents across the nation, and follows the deaths of two Minneapolis residents during interactions with federal agents in January, according to a release.
Renee Good, a 37-year-old graduate of Old Dominion University and mother of three, was shot Jan. 7 by a federal officer while in her car. Alex Pretti, a VA nurse who was also 37, was shot to death during an encounter with Border Patrol agents.
