Body found in Long Island Sound off coast of Waterford

Police are investigating after a body was found in the Long Island Sound off the coast of Waterford on Tuesday.

Authorities received the report that a body was in the water just after 1 p.m., leading to multiple agencies responding to search the waters, according to the Waterford Police Department.

Police said the response also included the Waterford Fire Department, Waterford Ambulance Service and the U.S. Coast Guard. Authorities were able to recover a body in the water when they arrived, according to police.

Investigators late Tuesday were still working to identify the individual, police said. An autopsy was expected to be performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.

Police said they are working with investigators with the New London State’s Attorney’s Office as well as the medical examiner’s office. The circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation.
