Lake County authorities said Wednesday that they have recovered a body inside a submerged vehicle at Waukegan Harbor.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office said that the identification of the body and cause of death were pending. The coroner’s office said the vehicle corresponded with 2024 reports of a missing person.
A company that was conducting sonar scans along the Lake Michigan shore reportedly located the vehicle Tuesday afternoon at the harbor and alerted police and firefighters. The coroner’s office said the body of an adult male was found belted into the driver’s seat.
Initial information indicates that the person and vehicle had been in the water for an extended period, authorities said.
An autopsy was conducted Wednesday. The case remains under investigation, the coroner’s office said.
