The body of a 23-year-old Alexandria man washed ashore Monday afternoon at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront after an unsuccessful rescue effort the previous day.
Virginia Beach police responded to a report of a distressed swimmer near where 12th Street meets the boardwalk at 4:09 p.m. Sunday. The man had been swimming with friends when he started asking for help, prompting a bystander to try and rescue him, according to police.
A “substantial” joint search by the police and fire departments, along with Virginia Beach Ocean Rescue and the Coast Guard, was suspended by about 7:30 p.m.
Shortly after noon Monday, officers found the man’s body on the beach near 23rd Street, about a mile north of where he went missing.
The victim’s name has not been released as police have yet to notify his next of kin as of Monday afternoon.
