Hampton Roads has brought home a state boys basketball title during each of the past three seasons.
Green Run won the Class 5 title last season, Hampton won the Class 4 crown in 2024, and Woodside won back-to-back Class 5 championships in 2023 and 2024.
Will it happen again this season?
The region tournaments got underway with first-round games last week. Here’s a capsule look at the tournaments.

Class 6 Region A
Tuesday’s semifinals: #5 Western Branch at #1 Manchester, 7:30 p.m.; #3 Landstown at #2 Oscar Smith, 6 p.m.
Championship: Thursday at higher seed.
The buzz: The two teams to watch are defending region champion Oscar Smith and Landstown. Oscar Smith has won eight games in a row after beating Grassfield 82-51 in the quarterfinals Friday. The Tigers (18-2) have been led by Cason Fitch, Corrin Buckingham, Kelley King and Stephen Walton. Landstown has won eight straight after blowing out Thomas Dale 84-35 in the quarterfinals. The Eagles (21-3) are led by sophomore guards Damien Robinson (20.9 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game, 4.8 assists per game, 3.3 steals per game) and Rashad Shaw (12.1 ppg, 2.4 spg). They also are getting help from junior forward Josiah Law (10.6 ppg, 5.2 rpg). But the key for Landstown will be 6-7 senior forward Alan Walker (6.5 rpg, 1 bpg), who must stay out of foul trouble if the Eagles are to advance deep in the postseason. Manchester beat Cosby 77-36 and Western Branch outlasted L.C. Bird 40-38 in the other quarterfinals.
____
Class 5 Region A
Monday’s quarterfinals: #8 Deep Creek at #1 Green Run, 6 p.m.; #5 Kellam at #4 Salem, 7 p.m.; #7 Cox at #2 Princess Anne, 7 p.m.; #6 Kempsville at #3 Indian River, 6 p.m.
Semifinals: Wednesday at higher seeds.
Championship: Friday at Kellam, 7 p.m.
The buzz: Green Run, the three-time defending region champion, is once again the favorite. The Stallions (19-4) are led by Zaevion Cleveland and Malik Gooden. One team the Stallions might want to avoid? Princess Anne, which beat Green Run twice this season. The Cavaliers (17-6) are led by sophomore guards Eziah Goodson and Namarqus Byrd. Indian River has won seven of its last eight games, including knocking off then-No. 7 Nansemond River.
____
Class 5 Region B
Wednesday’s semifinals at Norview: #1 Norview vs. #5 Woodside; #2 King’s Fork vs. #3 Nansemond River.
Championship: Friday at Norview, 8 p.m.
The buzz: This is the toughest region in Hampton Roads, and one of the toughest in the state. Norview (20-2) is the favorite as the Pilots have won nine in a row, including a victory over then-No. 4 Lake Taylor to finish the season 14-0 in the Eastern District. The Pilots, a region quarterfinal winner over Bethel on Saturday, are led by seniors — and cousins — Keon and Zymareon Mitchell. King’s Fork (19-4) comes in hot and defeated Kecoughtan 75-35 in the quarterfinals. The Bulldogs have won 11 in a row, including a win over Nansemond River to clinch the Southeastern District title. They are led by Tyson Harper (14 ppg), junior Melvin Wofford (13 ppg) and freshman Desmon “DJ” Hubbard (13 ppg). Woodside has won the last three region titles and opened the tournament with a 58-33 quarterfinal victory over Granby. Nansemond River beat Maury 61-52 in the quarterfinals.

Class 4 Region A
Hampton’s Joshua Rice follows through on a three point attempt during the first half of the game against Denbigh at Hampton High School in Hampton, Va., on Jan. 29, 2026. (Peter Casey / The Virginian-Pilot)
Wednesday’s semifinals: #4 Warhill at #1 Hampton, 7:30 p.m.; #3 Denbigh at #2 Lafayette, 7:30 p.m.
Championship: Friday at higher seed, 7:30 p.m.
The buzz: Hampton (22-1) is the clear favorite in this region and opened the tournament with a 77-43 quarterfinal win over Manor on Friday. ____
Class 3 Region A
Tuesday’s quarterfinals: #8 Heritage at #1 New Kent, 8 p.m.; #5 Hopewell at #4 Petersburg, 8 p.m.; #7 Lakeland at #2 Lake Taylor, 8 p.m.; #6 Tabb at #3 Colonial Heights, 7 p.m.
Semifinals: Thursday at higher seeds.
Championship: Friday at higher seed.
The buzz: Top-seeded New Kent has won six in a row and 13 of its last 14, while Lake Taylor was in contention for the top seed but lost two games last week. That may have been a blessing in disguise as the Titans avoided being in the same side of the bracket as Petersburg (15-4). The Crimson Wave, ranked No. 59 nationally by MaxPreps, lost four games in a row, but all four opponents were nationally ranked, including Florida’s Calvary Christian and Tennessee’s Bartlett — ranked No. 2 and No. 9. Lake Taylor, which lost in the region semifinals last year, is led by Jamari Edwards and Jacarri Jones. Heritage, Lakeland and Tabb won first-round games Friday to reach the quarterfinals.
