Brenden ‘Butterbean’ Queen gains 8th ARCA win of year, is all but assured of title

Brenden Queen earned his eighth ARCA Menards Series victory of the season Friday night, all but wrapping up the season points championship.

“Butterbean,” a 27-year-old Hickory High graduate and Old Dominion student, won the Reese’s 150 in Kansas City, Kansas, giving him a two-race sweep of this year’s Kansas Speedway events.

Queen, a former Langley Speedway champion, took the lead late in his Chevrolet and survived two overtime restarts in a race with 29 starters.

“What a rookie campaign,” Queen, who needs only to start the finale Saturday at Toledo Speedway to clinch the series championship, said on arcaracing.com. “One more race left. Maybe we can get nine (wins), but I think we’re closing in on what the main prize is.”

The finale, the Owens Corning 200, is set for 4 p.m. Saturday on FS2.

Queen started from the pole but lost the lead on the first lap to Joe Gibbs Racing driver Gio Ruggiero, who spent most of the evening ahead.

With 12 laps remaining, Queen got a push from 2014 series champion Mason Mitchell to take the lead. But a caution on the final scheduled lap for a crash forced an overtime restart and gave Ruggiero a chance to regain the lead.

Queen retained the top spot, but a spin by Thad Moffitt forced a second overtime restart. The second attempt went just like the first for Queen, who beat Ruggiero by 349-thousandths of a second.
