Ryan Odom’s bid to become the first Virginia men’s basketball coach failed as the Cavaliers lost 80-73 to Butler in the Greenbrier Tip-Off in a ballroom in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
Finley Bizjack scored 25 points and Michael Ajayi had his sixth double-double in six games for Butler (5-1). Ajayi, a senior transfer from Gonzaga, had 17 points and 14 rebounds. He is averaging 14.8 and 12.2 this season.
Butler led the entire second half, except after Malik Thomas hit a 3-pointer and a mid-range jumper to give UVA a 49-48 lead with 16:46 remaining. Bizjack buried a jumper on Butler’s next possession, and the Bulldogs led the rest of the way as Odom was charged with a technical foul for arguing a call.
Thomas led the Cavaliers with 24 points. Jacari White scored 14, Chance Mallory 11 and Thijs De Ridder 10.
Wyoming 75, Norfolk State 67: The Cowboys (5-1, with all five of their victories at home) built a 24-point lead early in the second half in Laramie, and the Spartans (3-4) rallied but couldn’t recover.
Anthony McComb III and Elijah Jamison led NSU with 19 points each, and Dian Wright-Forde had 13. McComb grabbed six rebounds. Wyoming’s Adam Harakow scored 18, going 9 for 9 at the free-0throw line.
Clemson 97, Georgia 94, OT: Jestin Porter had 18 points, and Efrem Johnson and Dillon Hunter combined to score 13 in overtime for Clemson (6-1) in the Palmetto Bracket of the Charleston Classic.
Porter sank four 3-pointers for the Tigers. Hunter scored six of his 16 points in the extra period, when Johnson added seven of his 13.
Hunter scored on a tip-in to begin OT, Johnson followed with a dunk, and Clemson never trailed in the final five minutes. Jeremiah Wilkinson scored 26 on 9-for-15 shooting with two 3-pointers for the Bulldogs (6-1).
No. 5 Duke 93, Howard 56: Cameron Boozer’s 26 points and 12 rebounds led Duke (7-0) to another lopsided home victory in the Brotherhood Run. Patrick Ngongba II added 16 points on 8-for-9 shooting.
Columbia 95, Longwood 70: Blair Thompson netted 25 points and Kenny Noland had 24 points and seven assists as the Lions (5-1) shot 52% and handled the Lancers (3-3) in New York. Former James Madison player Redd Thompson Jr. led Longwood with 13 points.
Georgia Tech 82, West Georgia 66: Kowacie Reeves Jr. scored 18, and Baye Ndongo and freshman Mouhamed Sylla posted double-doubles to lead the Yellow Jackets (5-1) over the Wolves (4-3) in Atlanta.
Reeves made 7 of 11 shots. Ndongo finished with 14 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. Sylla totaled 13 points and 11 boards for his fifth double-double in his first six games.
West Georgia’s Shelton Williams-Dryden had 21 points, nine rebounds and five steals.
Miami 97, Delaware State 41: Malik Reneau had 24 points and 10 rebounds, Tre Donaldson scored 21, and neither player missed a shot from the floor for the host Hurricanes (5-1) against the Hornets (2-5).
Quinnipiac 83, Pittsburgh 75: Amarri Monroe scored 25 points in a surprising road victory for the Bobcats (4-2). Roman Siulepa scored 20 for the Panthers (4-3).
Air Force 98, IU Indianapolis 85: Lucas Hobin netted 27 points for the Falcons (3-4), who won the second half 50-36 against the visiting Jaguars (2-6).
Late Saturday
Virginia Peninsula Community College 97, Bunker Hill CC 86: Capping a 2-1 trip to Massachusetts, the Gators (6-3) went to Boston and overcame the Bulldogs, who are the eighth-ranked team in National Junior College Athletic Association Division III.
Jordan Watlington, from Menchville High, scored 19 points to lead VPCC, which led 49-37 at the half. Jakobe Reed (Woodside) added 17, Chris Cyrus (Hampton Christian) 12, Dominique Fields Jr. (Indian River) 12, Emmanuel Angila (Kempsville) 11 and Jayden Sepulveda (Landstown) 10.
It was the third game in three days for the Gators. Friday, they lost 77-74 to Northern Essex Community College, the No. 9 team in the country, in Haverhill despite leading by 14 at halftime. Thursday, they won 82-49 over Quinsigamond CC in Worcester.
