‘Butterbean’ 3rd in ARCA race, will debut Friday night in Xfinity Series

Chesapeake’s Brenden “Butterbean” Queen will make his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut when he drives the No. 11 car for Kaulig Racing in Friday night’s race in Bristol, Tennessee.

Queen, a former Langley Speedway Late Model champion, leads the ARCA Menards Series standings. He placed third in Thursday night’s ARCA Bush’s Beans 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway, finishing behind only pole starter Brent Crews and runner-up Tristan McKee.

There are three races left on ARCA’s schedule of 20.

Queen will stay at Bristol, which bills itself as “The Last Great Colosseum,” for the Food City 300 at 7:30. Qualifying is set for 3:05 p.m. for the 39 drivers.

Schuller earns state Senior Open title

Pro Rick Schuller posted a two-day total of 3-under-par 141 this week at Independence Golf Club to win his second consecutive Senior Open of Virginia title and his fourth overall. He earned $1,050.

Schuller, who teaches at Meadowbrook Country Club in Richmond, finished one stroke ahead of Jimmy Flippen in the 71-man field of players who are at least 50 years old. Former Old Dominion player Jon Hurst of Fredericksburg Country Club was the low amateur, two strokes behind Schuller.

Thomas Garner, who grew up in Newport News, tied for seventh at 2 over. Pro Carey Hodsden of Chesapeake shared 10th place at 147.

Beck awaits US Mid-Amateur title defense

Evan Beck of Virginia Beach will try to defend his U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship when stroke-play qualifying begins Saturday at Troon Country Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

After being the runner-up in 2023, Beck won the tournament last year at Kinloch Golf Club in the Richmond area after sharing stroke-play medalist honors. This year, he’s among 264 competitors who are at age 25 or older and whose handicap is 2.4 or better.The top 64 players after 36 holes will advance to match play, which begins Monday. The championship match is set for Thursday.

JMU player from Poquoson honored

James Madison senior midfielder Skyler Brown of Poquoson was named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

She scored in overtime to lift the Dukes past Richmond 2-1, then had two goals and an assist in a 4-1 victory at American. Against American, she posted a career-high five points.

Hampton sets record for most wins in season

A three-goal flurry from the Hampton Pirates in an 11-minute span of the second half helped propel them to a 3-1 win over Virginia State on Wednesday afternoon at Powhatan Field in Norfolk.

Hampton (4-3-1) set a record for the most wins in a season in the 10-year history of the program, surpassing the three earned in 2017 and 2024.

Hampton held a 38-7 shots advantage and an 18-4 advantage in shots on goal.

After falling behind in the 75th minute on Morgan Paris’ goal for VSU, HU pulled even 48 seconds later as Keri Geter knocked in a pass from Elodie Metho. Mattie Edozie scored the go-ahead goal off a Makayla Wade pass in the 82nd minute, and Jayda Sutton scored from another Metho assist in the 87th.

COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL

VCU to play in major 2026 Maui tourney

VCU was announced as part of the eight-team field for the Southwest Maui Invitational from Nov. 23-25, 2026 at Lahaina Civic Center in Hawaii. It will be the tournament’s 43rd edition.

Also set to compete: Arizona, Brigham Young, Clemson, Colorado State, Mississippi, Providence and Washington.

Seven of this tournament’s winners have gone on to take the national championship in the same season.
