Car crash escalates into deadly gunfight with cops in Greenwich Village: police

A car crash in Greenwich Village escalated into a deadly gunfight with police Thursday night, authorities said.

Police said the rain of bullets exploded on Bedford St. at Downing St. around 10:57 p.m. after cops responded to a car crash at the location.

According to police, the car’s occupant waved a firearm and opened fire at police, missing his target and ignoring a command that he drop the weapon.

Police at the scene then fired back, hitting the gunman, who went into cardiac arrest, and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died, cops said.

There were no injuries to officers at the scene, where a gun was recovered.
