All that jazz

“A Charlie Brown Christmas” debuted on CBS six decades ago. The 30-minute TV special that featured characters from the popular “Peanuts” comic strip enchanted viewers with its gentle, comforting theme of friends and families celebrating the holidays.

But it also struck a chord with the delightful, jazzy soundtrack composed by Vince Guaraldi that included “Christmas Time Is Here,” “Linus and Lucy” and “Skating,” along with such standards as “Hark! The Heralds Sing” and “O Tannenbaum.”

Dec. 6 and 7, the Eric Mintel Quartet will recreate the soundtrack and perform holiday originals and traditional favorites at the Pioneer Theater in downtown Manteo.

Asked during a telephone interview about the enduring popularity of Guaraldi’s “Charlie Brown” score, Mintel said: “It’s simple, understated and melodic.”

While the quartet will stay true to the arrangements of the beloved soundtrack, he added that the group’s originals and remakes of classics “are not your usual jazz.”

The quartet performs at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 with doors opening at 6 p.m., and at 2 p.m. Dec. 7 with doors opening at 1 p.m. Tickets range from $29.50 to $61.25 (online includes fees) or $25 to $55 at the door. Theatre of Dare: “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”

The local troupe gets in the holiday spirit with a play that is at turns funny, poignant and enlightening. It centers on a couple having difficulty putting on a church Christmas pageant who find themselves with the most unlikely cast: the notorious six kids in the Herdman family.

“They smoke, cuss, get in fights, sit on people” explains Leah Cribb, who’s directing the production. “They wreak havoc all over town.”

But the siblings get in touch with their inner elves. Call it a Christmas pageant miracle.

“It’s just a sweet story,” Cribb said.
