Chances increasing for Hampton Roads to get freezing fog Sunday and light snow Monday

Forecasters say freezing fog is possible for southeastern Virginia Sunday, and odds are increasing for a light accumulation of snow Monday.

As of Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service in Wakefield forecasts with high confidence below freezing temperatures will set in late Saturday and into Sunday morning throughout Virginia, including inland locations near the coast and the Eastern Shore. Freezing fog is possible and could become widespread late Sunday morning — resulting in a light glaze of ice on elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses.

Additionally, a cold front Monday could bring light snow for the area. Forecasters say the probability has increased for portions of central and southern Virginia, particularly areas further inland. There’s a higher chance for Newport News — 35% — while odds are lower for Virginia Beach, at 24%. However, snow coverage and temperatures are currently uncertain.

Much of Virginia received the first snowfall of the season Friday morning, with areas of the Piedmont region getting 3 inches and over. Besides the Historic Triangle and surrounding area, Hampton Roads was largely spared from the effects of winter weather.
