Christopher Newport (4-0) climbed two spots to No. 21 in the d3football.com national poll following a 49-41 double-overtime comeback victory Saturday at Rowan in a New Jersey Athletic Conference opener.

Mary Washington ends CNU’s long home streak

Mary Washington (8-2-1) ended CNU’s 51-game home unbeaten streak (46-0-5) with a 1-0 triumph as Maci Landel scored in the 47th minute. It was the first home loss since 2019 for the Captains (8-1-2), who are ranked third in Division III.

Landstown High graduate Shyenne Diaz scored a hat trick in an 11-minute span of the second half as Virginia Wesleyan (8-2-1, 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) won 4-0 at home over Shenandoah (3-6-3, 1-2).

No. 1 UVA shuts out Virginia Tech

No. 1 Virginia (10-0-1, 4-0 ACC) won 2-1 over Virginia Tech (4-6-3, 0-4-1) in Charlottesville on goals by Maggie Cagle in the 14th minute and Lia Godfrey in the 64th. Natalie Mitchell scored in the 73rd for the Hokies, who were outshot 20-8.

W&M blanks Charleston

Sunday, William & Mary beat the College of Charleston 1-0 at Albert/Daly Field despite being outshot 21-9. Ivey Crain scored for the Tribe (4-5-4, 2-1-2 Coastal Athletic Association) in the 74th minute against the Cougars (7-5-1, 3-2). Gwen Doughty made six saves for a shutout win.

UNC Wilmington (8-3-2, 4-0-1 CAA) won 4-1 at home over Hampton (5-8-1, 0-5), though the Pirates’ Nylah Jennings scored with 3:20 remaining.

Jamestown grad scores in Tribe’s shutout

William & Mary (2-6-3, 1-3-1 Coastal Athletic Association) defeated UNC Wilmington 2-0 at Albert/Daly Field on goals by Webb Kosich in the 67th minute and former Jamestown High star Max Cooper in the 89th. UNCW fell to 3-5-2, 2-2.

Virginia Wesleyan incurs first ODAC loss

Washington and Lee (4-2-4, 2-0-1 ODAC) posted a 2-0 road victory to cool off Virginia Wesleyan (7-2-1, 1-1). Taha Kaba scored in the third minute and Isaac Arrowood in the 80th for the Generals.

CNU sweeps pair, including No. 15 W&L

Christopher Newport (12-6) knocked off Averett 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-15) and Washington and Lee, the No. 15 team in Division III, 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20) Saturday in Lexington.

Against W&L, the Captains’ Fielding Croft had 60 assists to set a school freshman record. She tied a school record for the rally-scoring era, which began in 2002. Alyssa Dozier had 24 kills, Simara Alexander and Samantha Dorn had 15 kills each, and Grassfield High graduate Maddie Hanes had a season-high 24 digs.

Against Averett, Croft had 37 assists.

Regent splits 2 matches

Regent (9-5) breezed past Trinity Washington 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-10) before losing 3-2 (22-25, 25-15, 25-16, 14-25, 16-14) to Eastern Mennonite. Against Trinity Washington, Landstown High graduate Brielle Peltonen had 15 digs and Denbigh Baptist graduate Rylee Stewart had 14 assists and four kills.

No. 3 UNC prevails at Old Dominion

No. 3 North Carolina (10-1) won 4-1 at Old Dominion (4-7) despite Sanci Molkenboer’s second-quarter goal for the Monarchs. UNC’s Reese Anetsberger and Ryleigh Heck had two assists apiece.

Loar nets hat trick in No. 1 Captains’ win

Lindsey Loar scored her second college hat trick as No. 1 Christopher Newport (11-0) shut out visiting Rhodes of Memphis, Tennessee, 4-0.
