Christopher Newport sweeps conference indoor track and field titles

COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD

Christopher Newport swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference men’s and women’s indoor championships, while Seth Morris and Rylee Ehrett were celebrated as the Field Athletes of the Meet at the Freeman Center.

Claiming their sixth consecutive indoor title, the women collected 158.33 points to beat UC Santa Cruz by 29. Meanwhile, the CNU men had 166 points. Salisbury came in second with 146, while defending champion UC Santa Cruz placed third with 135.

Morris and Ehrett combined to win the shot put and weight throw, encompassing four of the Captains’ eight individual titles.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

NSU wins twice, Hampton once Saturday in Battle of Bay

Norfolk State (5-3) won both of its Saturday games in the Battle of the Bay, 6-1 over Quinnipiac and 4-2 against St. Francis of Pennsylvania. Kailey Bryant and Maddy Morris were the winning pitchers.

The Spartans scored four in the first inning against Quinnipiac, with Bryant’s RBI double, Morris’ two-run homer and Julia Kearney’s RBI single.

The Bobcats appeared poised to take the lead in the third with bases loaded, but a lineup infraction resulted in the third out of the inning, nullifying a grand slam. Bryant hit a two-run double in the fourth.

Bristyl Riddick belted two homers against St. Francis. McKaley Kohn and Kachelle Refour hit RBI singles.

Also in the Battle of the Bay, Carmynn Bonner and Violet Salazar each had two-run singles in a five-run third as Hampton (4-4) knocked off Maine 6-4.

Sunday’s games were canceled because of rain.

No. 20 Hokies hammer No. 12 Georgia

Jordan Lynch was 3 for 3 and Emma Mazzarone pitched a complete game as No. 20 Virginia Tech (10-2) won 9-3 Saturday at No. 12 Georgia. Nora Abromavage hit her fourth home run of the season.

No. 21 UVA improves to 12-1

No. 21 Virginia (12-1) defeated Ohio State 8-0 and Delaware 5-0 Saturday. Alex Call’s two-run double, Bella Cabral’s solo homer and Reagan Hickey’s two-run homer sparked the Cavaliers against the Buckeyes. Kassidy Hudson’s RBI double, Macee Eaton’s two-run homer and Jade Hylton’s RBI single were instrumental versus the Blue Hens.

COLLEGE MEN’S LACROSSE

No. 3 CNU moves to 5-0

No. 3 Christopher Newport (5-0) overcame No. 17 Stevenson 16-11 in a Division III duel at Jennings Family Stadium. Kevin Miller had nine points, including six assists, and Smith netted six goals. Stevenson fell to 1-2.

Host Virginia Wesleyan (2-0) zoomed past Methodist 23-10 as Keagan Hall and Thomas Lewis IV each recorded five goals. Zachary Dupill added four.

Hampton (0-4), seeking its first official victory in any game since a 6-5 season in 2019, came as close it has in quite a while.

The Pirates fell 17-15 at home to VMI despite scoring its most goals ever against a Division I foe. The Pirates led 11-7, fell behind 13-11 and tied the score at 13 and 15. The Keydets (1-3) scored twice in the final 1:30.

Hampton’s Anthony Bardonille Jr. and Maliik Wood each scored four goals on the night, while Bardonille led the Pirates with three assists.

No. 17 Virginia (2-1) scored 11 seconds in and went on to win 19-7 at Stony Brook (0-3). Brendan Millon had five goals and two assists, and his brother McCabe Millon had two goals and four assists.

Returning to the school he coached in 2005 and ’06, Lars Tiffany became the third UVA head coach to achieve 100 wins, joining Jim “Ace” Adams and Dom Starsia. Tiffany’s record is 100-45.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S LACROSSE

W&M, CNU prevail

Grace Walter and Finley Hoffman scored hat tricks to guide William & Mary (2-2) past George Mason 14-12 in Fairfax. The Patriots dropped to 2-3.

Senior Elena Sorkin had a career-high-tying six points (including four goals) and Molly Campbell made six takeaways to help CNU (2-0) defeat Roanoke 17-9.

Marlins face growing pains in debut

Playing the first varsity games in program history, Virginia Wesleyan lost 111-0 to Lindsey Wilson of Kentucky and 39-6 to Winston-Salem State in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. Kendall Abercrombie connected on a 42-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Community enjoys Striders’ annual All-Comers meet

The Tidewater Striders hosted their fifth annual All-Comers Indoor Track Meet on Feb. 15 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Designed for athletes of all ages and abilities, the meet highlighted the inclusive spirit of the local running community. Participants ranged in age from 3 to 79, creating a true family atmosphere.

Athletes competed in a full slate of events, including the mile, 800 meters, 400-, 200- and 50-meter dashes, along with field events such as the long jump and shot put. The meet also featured a pentathlon and concluded with a spirited distance medley relay.

The featured mile delivered strong competition, with Lincoln Sama winning the men’s race in 4:43.98, followed by Jake Sutor (4:45.68) and Hunter Swan (4:47.36).  Scarlett Baer captured the women’s title in 5:40.50, ahead of Paige Ward (5:42.31) and Katie Kephart (5:55.80).

In the masters division, Patrick Wilson won the men’s mile in 5:03.78, while Kari Tallent led the women in 6:01.60. The mile race-walk champions were Thomas Hicks (9:20.90) and Wendy Rafferty (11:55.90). Strong performances were seen across all age groups and events throughout the day.

Striders president Thomas Hicks said the club expressed appreciation for many volunteers, as well as continued support from Atlantic Timing and the Virginia Beach Sports Center for providing a first-class venue.
