Clarendon Hills village manager resigning effective Oct. 1

After being seemingly mysteriously absent from the office for the past month or more, Clarendon Hills Village Manager Zach Creer is officially resigning, effective Oct. 1.

His employment status seemed to be in question, as he had not responded to phone calls or emails over the past multiple weeks, and the word from Village Hall was simply that Creer was “out of the office.”

In addition, in the weekly staff reports from department heads, posted each Friday on the village’s website, Creer has not issued one since Aug. 1. Instead, those have been written by Mera Johnson, assistant village manager/human resources director.

The agenda for Monday’s Village Board meeting included an employment separation agreement between Creer and the village.

Creer said Friday he has been working from home to assist with day-to-day operations during his absence from his office at Village Hall and will continue do so until Oct. 1

In addition, Creer has a deal to serve as an independent contractor to the village under a separate Independent Contractor Agreement, for a fixed term of six months, “to answer reasonable, intermittent questions by phone/email for a total fee of $5,000, payable in six equal monthly installments,” according to the separation agreement.

Either party may terminate the Independent Contractor Agreement for convenience on 10 days written notice, with fees prorated through the termination date.

Johnson said Friday plans for finding a new village manager will be made soon, adding that she is not interested in the position.

Meanwhile, Paul Dalen will be working as acting village manager, starting Oct. 1. He has served as the Clarendon Hills public safety director since February 2024 and prior to that was police chief for six years, a position he was appointed to after working in the village since 1994.

Dalen will be paid a base biweekly salary of $7,106 as acting village manager.
