Christopher Newport (5-1) moved into the rankings of the D3baseball.com and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association at No. 22 before its home game at 2 p.m. Wednesday against Bridgewater (7-0).
It’s the first ranking for CNU since March 9 last year, when the Captains were No. 18.
Also, CNU’s Aaron Maxie was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week. He drove in five runs in back-to-back games as the Captains beat Marietta and Cortland, then ranked 13th in the nation. He was 9 for 16 (.563) with four runs.
Hokies edge JMU
Virginia Tech (7-1) won 5-4 at James Madison (4-3) as first baseman Ethan Gibson made a diving stop to retire Keegan Haesler for the game’s final out with runners on second and third bases.
Sam Grube scored twice for Tech, and he, Owen Petrich, Ethan Ball and Nick Locurto had two hits apiece. Ike Schmidly, Reece Moody and Kyle Langley each had two of JMU’s 10 hits. Langley and Josiah Seguin each had a run and an RBI.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
No. 18 UVA blasts Longwood
No. 18 Virginia (13-1), which hasn’t lost since its opener, slugged five home runs in a 7-1 victory at Longwood (2-12). Bella Cabral hit the first two, followed by Kelsey Hackett, Macee Eaton and Hannah Weismer.
CAA honors HU’s Evans
Hampton University third baseman Sydney Evans was named the CAA Rookie of the Week.
Evans helped the Pirates (4-4) secure a 2-1 mark at the Battle of the Bay tournament. The freshman from Detroit went 5 for 10 with a double and a triple, scoring three times and knocking in four runs.
2 Captains capture conference awards
CNU catcher/first baseman Natalie Quinlan and Caroline Alger were named the C2C Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
Quinlan hit two home runs and went 3 for 5 in a season-opening doubleheader sweep at Methodist, driving in five runs for the day.
Alger, a sophomore, retired all 14 batters she faced in her debut for the Captains, the No. 10 team in Division III.

Sun Belt honors JMU’s Davis
James Madison guard Cliff Davis was named the Sun Belt Player of the Week. He had 49 points and 10 rebounds in victories at Coastal Carolina and Georgia State, hitting 18 of 29 field-goal tries (6 of 14 from beyond the arc).

Pirates gain first honor
Hampton’s Anthony Bardonille Jr. has been named the CAA Rookie of the Week.
The freshman from Washington, D.C., scored four goals and assisted on three in a 17-15 loss. Saturday’s game was the second time in four games Bardonille has recorded a hat trick.
This was the first weekly lacrosse award for HU in CAA history.

C2C honors CNU pair
CNU’s Elena Sorkin was named the C2C Offensive Player of the Week, and sophomore teammate Molly Campbell was the Defensive Player of the Week.
Sorkin, a senior in her second year with the Captains, matched her career high with six points in a 17-9 victory over Roanoke. Campbell caused a career-high six turnovers and set a career high with four ground balls.

NSU’s Yurkova gains award
Norfolk State junior Yuliya Yurkova earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors after leading the Spartans to 4-3 victories over both Hampton and East Carolina.
Yurkova posted a 2-0 record at No. 1 singles. She defeated Hampton’s Serena Bryan 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 and won 6-4, 6-3 against East Carolina’s Ivona Savekova. Yurkova and Ines Sabadie were 1-1 in No. 1 doubles sets.

CAA honors Tribe tandem
William & Mary’s Oliver Hague and Gur Trakhtenberg were selected as the CAA Men’s Doubles Team of the Week. They went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles, helping the Tribe defeat Navy 7-0 and Brown 4-2. They won 6-4 against the Midshipmen and 6-3 versus Brown, and Hague and Trakhtenberg were a combined 3-0 in singles in those matches.

UVA teammates honored
Virginia teammates Suzie Kennelly earned Atlantic Coast Conference honors after strong performances at the Virginia Tech Challenge.
Kennelly, the Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, threw a personal best of 15.34 meters (50 feet, 4 inches) to finish fourth in the shot put. Her mark in Blackburg was her first over 15 meters this season.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Women’s Freshman of the Week Rice was the runner-up in the preliminaries and finals. Recording the second-fastest qualifying time of 8.50, Rice lowered her time in the final to 8.40 to place just behind teammate Maya Rollins.
COLLEGE MEN’S GOLF
ODU 12th in Puerto Rico
Old Dominion placed 12th among 15 teams at the Dorado Beach Collegiate in Puerto Rico, firing a 36-over-par 900 for 54 holes.
Stetson won at 15 under par, and Southern Miss was second at 7 under.
Cullen Campbell of Virginia Beach led the Monarchs by tying for 26th at 3-over 219. Stetson’s Matthis Lefevre won the medal at 6 under.

CAA meet begins Wednesday at Hampton VA Aquaplex
The Coastal Athletic Association men’s and women’s championships head back to the Hampton VA Aquaplex for the fourth year in a row, running Wednesday through Sunday. William & Mary is among the eight women’s programs and five men’s programs competing.
