Christopher Newport earned a first-round NCAA Division III tourney victory in dramatic fashion Saturday, overcoming Berry 2-1 on Michael Hackworth’s goal 5:40 into overtime.
The 22nd-ranked Captains (13-2-5) advanced to a round-of-32 match at 3 p.m. Sunday against No. 13 Lynchburg, the host of the four-team grouping. The Hornets, coached by former Virginia Wesleyan player and assistant coach Chris Yeager, defeated Transylvania of Kentucky 4-0 as Gloucester High alum Kohlby Wilson had a goal and an assist.
Asher Kuzemka’s goal 24:08 into the match, off a Drew McWhinney assist, gave the Captains a 1-0 lead. The Vikings (11-6-5) of Rome, Georgia, pulled even on Max Albertson’s goal in the 77th minute.
Joe Summerfield and Ben Sullivan assisted on Hackworth’s winner, which capped CNU’s 14-11 edge in shots. Hayden Dewey made two saves for the victory.
First Colonial graduate helps H-SC make NCAA history
Jack Delaney of Virginia Beach, a senior from First Colonial High, had the first goal and an assist as No. 23 Hampden-Sydney (14-4-2), playing at home, shut out Otterbein of Ohio 3-0 for the Tigers’ first NCAA Tournament victory in school history.
Zakky Johnston and Walker Stebbings scored in the final 5:41 for the Tigers, who will face No. 6 Emory at 3 p.m. Sunday. Cape Henry Collegiate alum Mason Dudley and Cox graduate Michael Farmer nearly scored for H-SC.
Also in the NCAA D-III tourney, No. 25 Denison blanked Washington and Lee 1-0 on Phil Koutsaftis’ goal in the 87th minute.
In the Eastern College Athletic Conference quarterfinals, Franciscan of Cleveland won 4-1 at Virginia Wesleyan, ending the Marlins’ year at 12-6-1. Zach Bittler scored for VWU in the 59th minute.

Penn State Harrisburg ousts CNU
No. 14 Christopher Newport suffered a rare home loss — 2-1 in the NCAA Division III championship tourney’s first round to Penn State Harrisburg. The Captains finished 14-2-3 after outshooting Harrisburg 13-5.
The unranked Lions will take on No. 11 Rowan at 6 p.m. Sunday in the round of 32 on CNU’s field. Rowan won 4-3 on penalty kicks after its 1-1 draw with No. 16 Misericordia in the second match on CNU’s field.
Harrisburg went ahead 1-0 in the 47th minute on Diana Pon’s long shot. Molly Seventko pulled CNU in the 61st on a breakaway, but the Lions netted the winner when Abigail Frew headed in a free kick by Pon.
It was the only time this season CNU allowed more than one goal in a match, and it was the first time in the Captains’ last nine NCAA appearances that they didn’t advance.
VWU shut out by Stevens
Virginia Wesleyan, which gained an at-large berth, lost 2-0 to Stevens and finished 15-4-3. The Ducks, based in Hoboken, New Jersey, got goals from Angela Dinh in the 15th minute and Lauren Alley in the 59th.
Also in the first round, Washington and Lee shut out Marymount 3-0, Mary Washington defeated Vassar 1-0 on Maury High graduate Cassidy Shaw’s goal in the 61st minute, and Swarthmore downed Bridgewater 4-2.

No. 1 CNU wins in OT, reaches home quarterfinal
Top-ranked Christopher Newport withstood a strong upset bid from No. 17 Lynchburg in the NCAA Division III round of 16, winning 2-1 when Lindsey Loar laced in a golden goal off the inside of the right post and across the line 2:53 into overtime in Newport News.
The Captains (18-0) will return to Jennings Family Stadium at 1 p.m. Sunday to face No. 5 Salisbury, its archrival, which beat No. 11 Dickinson 5-0.
CNU outshot Lynchburg 29-3 and took the lead in the 24th minute when Emily Evans scored off a penalty corner, assisted by Courtney Hughlett. But the Hornets (17-5) pulled even at 1 on their first corner of the day as Grace Peterson scored in the 40th minute with an assist from Menchville High graduate Danielle Coon.

ODU ends year with losses at Arkansas State
Old Dominion (5-22, 2-14 Sun Belt) closed its season with a pair of 3-0 losses to Arkansas State (19-8, 12-4) in Jonesboro.
Friday, when the score was 25-14, 25-15, 25-7, Elisa Maggi had eight kills, Wiktoria Zagumny 17 assists and Katie Kilpatrick 14 assists for ODU. Saturday, when the Monarchs fell 25-14, 25-13, 25-17, Zagumny contributed 16 assists, four digs and three blocks.
