Christopher Newport 68, Johns Hopkins 65: Toa Hollenbeck scored 18 points and Zyir Baskerville scored his team’s final four points — including two free throws in the final seconds — as the Captains, ranked 20th nationally by d3hoops.com, held off the No. 24 Bluejays at Freeman Center on Wednesday night.
Baskerville scored in the paint with 3:33 left to give CNU a 66-63 lead, and his free throws with 4 seconds left gave the Captains the final margin. Charlie Jackson’s 3-pointer with 1 second left was off the mark for Johns Hopkins.
Ryan Derderian and Collin Hines scored 10 points each for the Captains (14-3). Johns Hopkins fell to 9-3.
Virginia Wesleyan 79, Washington and Lee 54: Omari DeVeaux scored 19 points and led four players in double figures as the Marlins cruised to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference win in Lexington Wednesday night.
VWU’s TJ East added 15 points, followed by Malcolm Velmar (14 points) and Austin Smith (13 points).
The Marlins (8-4, 4-0 ODAC), looking to return to the d3hoops.com Top 25 after falling out, held a 43-24 rebounding edge and nabbed 11 steals against the Generals (10-2, 2-1).
Virginia Wesleyan made three straight 3-pointers to start the second half to take a commanding 52-32 lead and put the game out of reach.
Women’s basketball
Marshall 77, Old Dominion 70: Timaya Lewis-Eutsey scored a game-high 33 points, and the Thundering Herd used a fourth-quarter surge to hold on for a Sun Belt Conference victory at home in Huntington, West Virginia.
Marshall (14-3, 5-0 Sun Belt) outscored ODU 24-14 in the fourth quarter and snapped the Monarchs’ winning streak at three games.
ODU (10-6, 2-2) took a one-point lead with five minutes left on a 3-pointer from Simaru Fields (17 points). But Kassie Ingram’s 3-pointer put the Herd ahead for good at 67-65.
ODU’s Kelsey Thompson finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and En’Dya Buford had 11 points.
Virginia Wesleyan 79, Lynchburg 76: Keira Bagwell scored 23 points, Sydney Turner added 19 and the Marlins held on for an ODAC victory at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach.
The Marlins (8-4, 2-1) trailed 23-15 after the first quarter, but stormed ahead 35-31 at the half and increased their lead to 57-43 after three quarters. Lynchburg (7-5, 0-3) trailed 77-65 with 1:18 left, but scored 11 straight points to cut its deficit to 77-76 with 15 seconds left.
Maesyn Blaylock made a free throw with 13 seconds left, and Bre Robinson added another with 1 second remaining to keep VWU in front.
Audra Petty paced Lynchburg with a game-high 28 points.
