Meteorologists are warning of rainy and flooding conditions this week ahead of a storm system moving into the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a coastal low pressure system will develop to the south and make its way toward Hampton Roads starting Monday evening. Across the area, 1 to 3 inches of rain are possible, but localized totals could reach up to 4 inches. Wind gusts of 40 to 45 mph are expected.
The weather service is forecasting up to 6 inches of inundation in areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. A flood warning has been issued in Virginia Beach, and areas from Jamestown to Norfolk are under a flood watch. Wind advisories are also in effect.
Wetlands Watch, a local environmental group, reported that peak high tide is Tuesday afternoon, and when combined with gusty winds and heavy rain, it will likely be “a bit of mess” for flood-prone areas.
“This comes after over a week of high water which has soaked shorelines/raised coastal groundwater levels — meaning there is not much dry ground to absorb the rain,” the group reported.
Coastal waters are also under a high surf advisory, with some waves reaching 7 to 9 feet. A “dangerous rip current” is also possible, weather service meteorologists said.
