Cold weather triggers fire alarm and ground stop at Orlando International Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary ground stop on Sunday at the Orlando International Airport after a fire alarm was set off due to the cold weather, officials said.

Around 3:30 p.m., Orlando International Airport Fire Rescue responded to a fire alarm call at the air traffic control tower, said spokesperson Gregory Angel said in an email.

“Out of an abundance of caution, and because the alarm alerted to water flow, ATC staff evacuated the tower,” Angel said. “ARFF was immediately on scene and was able to quickly determine that a sprinkler head activated inside the tower due to the cold weather. There was no indication of a fire. No hazards were found, other than the water flow.”

As staff were able to return to the control tower the FAA issued a temporary ground stop, Angel said.

“Flight operations are now gradually returning to normal,” Angel said.
