Commentary: How computer-based learning can accelerate student success

Computer-based learning is reshaping education by offering students the flexibility to learn at their own pace — a vital option for those whose needs may not be fully met in conventional settings. But technology alone isn’t the answer. The most successful computer-based programs operate within supportive brick-and-mortar schools, where caring, highly-qualified educators coach, mentor and keep students engaged. When digital tools are paired with human connection and accountability, students don’t just catch up — they thrive. In some cases, students are earning double the credits compared to a typical high school timeline. This approach empowers learners to take charge of their progress — whether they’re navigating personal challenges, learning English or balancing work and school.

Technology-based school programs have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in enhancing student achievement compared to traditional classroom settings. For instance, a study conducted in Central Illinois revealed that students in classrooms equipped with 1:1 technology — where each student has access to a personal device — showed significant improvements in academic performance. With each chapter completed, test passed or class finished, students see immediate results, creating a powerful cycle of positive reinforcement that motivates students. They can access personalized dashboards to easily check their credits and GPA on demand. Parents also benefit from this system, with their own dashboard to monitor their child’s progress, grades and attendance as it happens.

The computer-based model also provides crucial flexibility for students who can’t attend school every day or during traditional hours due to jobs, family obligations or personal challenges.
