Connecticut man turns himself in for Hartford murder

A Connecticut man has turned himself in and been charged with murder for a deadly shooting in Hartford, police said Wednesday.

Xavier Soto, 34, was accused of killing Miguel Alfinez, 38, on Friday night in Connecticut’s capital city, the Hartford Police Department said in a Facebook post.

Soto, a Vernon resident, was charged with murder, risk of injury to a child, first-degree reckless endangerment and criminal use of a firearm, according to police. He was being held on $2 million bond.

Alfinez was shot just before 7 p.m. Friday night on Broadview Terrace in Hartford, according to police. Officers responded shortly afterward, and Alfinez was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators quickly identified Soto as a suspect, Hartford Police Lt. Aaron Boisvert told the Hartford Courant. Police obtained a warrant for his arrest before he surrendered on Tuesday night.

Authorities have not publicly speculated on a motive for the shooting or detailed the evidence that led them to Soto as a suspect.

Alfinez’s murder is one of two Hartford-related killings in the past week in Connecticut. Also on Wednesday, police identified Hartford resident Frank Garay as the victim of a deadly shooting in Waterbury on Monday night.

Garay, 29, was found dead on a street just before 8 p.m. that night, about 20 miles southwest of his hometown. No suspects have yet to be arrested in the case.
