Connor Barry throws 4 more TD passes as Christopher Newport improves to 2-0

Connor Barry continued his season’s sizzling start with four more touchdown passes as Christopher Newport hammered Gettysburg 49-14 Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania.

Barry, the reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, completed 21 of 28 for 276 yards and ran for 40 on four carries. He has nine touchdown passes this season, including five in a season-opening 38-7 victory over Trine.

Three of Saturday’s TD throws went to running back Gunner White, a Tallwood High alum who had 70 yards on seven catches, plus 47 yards and a TD on six carries. Jordin Lennon led the Captains with 61 yards on eight rushes.

Even Matt Dzierski, a former two-time NJAC yearly honoree, threw a touchdown pass and completed 2 of 3 as a backup. He mostly had to give up quarterbacking because of injuries but returned as a wide receiver this season.

CNU amassed 548 yards of offense while giving up 318 to the Bullets (0-2). The Captains led 14-0 after one quarter and 42-7 at the half.

North Carolina Wesleyan 49, Apprentice 16: Nahjir Seagraves ran for four touchdowns and 159 yards on 18 carries as the Bishops (2-0) spoiled the Builders’ home opener in Newport News.

Quarterback Kendall Hunt ran for both touchdowns for Apprentice (0-2) and finished with 19 yards on eight carries. He completed 12 of 15 passes for 92 yards, and Trevaris Jones completed 6 of 13 for 53 yards.

Baker Green (five catches for 60) and Kyle Musselman (seven for 49) paced Apprentice’s receiving corps. A tackle by Apprentice’s Campbell Clark forced a fourth-quarter safety.
