KING AND QUEEN — A King and Queen family lost their home and their pet to a fire that started in the kitchen on Wednesday morning.
Firefighters with King and Queen Emergency Services were called to a home on Newtown Road to find the home engulfed in flames, according to a news release. All of the home’s three occupants escaped the blaze, but one burn injury was reported.
Units from Upper King and Queen Volunteer Fire, Walkerton Community Fire Association, Caroline County Fire, Central Volunteer Fire Department, Lower King and Queen Fire, and King and Queen Emergency Services responded to the blaze, King and Queen EMS spokeswoman Laura Heller said in the release.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze in 30 minutes using about 9,200 gallons of water. Heller said a pet died in the fire. There were no working smoke detectors in the residence, she said.
The fire was determined to have been an accidental cooking fire, Heller said. The Red Cross was called to assist the family.
