Numerous area golfers and teams earned their way to the VHSL state tournament with recent region tournament performances.The 18-hole state Class 5 and 6 tournaments will be held at Bristow Manor in Northern Virginia, Class 3 and 4 will be at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg, and Class 1 and 2 will be Hobbs Hole in Tappahannock.
The odd-number classes will compete Monday, and the even-number groups will play Tuesday.
Here’s a look at how the regions shaked out:
Class 5 Region A
Cox took the region championship with a 303 at Red Wing Lake Golf Course, while Ocean Lakes shot 314 for second place and a state tourney berth. First Colonial (318), Great Bridge (320), Kellam (325), Princess Anne (339), Hickory (348) and Kempsville (350) rounded out the field.
First Colonial’s Drew Hartman and Cox teammates Maddox Johnson and Barrett Pendergast shot 73s to lead the individual pack. Hartman, Great Bridge’s Nathan Methany (74) and Hudson Hines (76), who attends Cox but was not in the Falcons’ six-player lineup eligible to produce four team scores, qualified individually.
Class 5 Region B
Led by individual medalist Thomas Aman’s 76, Menchville won the team title at 351 on Newport News Golf Club’s Deer Run Course. Nansemond River joined the Monarchs in qualifying for state, edging Granby after both shot 368s. Maury (370), Kecoughtan (396), Woodside (443), Norview (519) and Bethel (600) also competed.
Nansemond River’s James Parkman (79) took second individually. The individual state qualifiers were Kecoughtan’s Andrew Hermann (84), Maury’s Henry Pfitzner (85) and Granby’s Tristan Munoz (88).
Class 6 Region A
Led by Alex Allgood, Grassfield earned its way into the state tournament by placing second in the Class 6 Region A tourney at the Country Club of Petersburg.
Allgood (third individually at 75), Jackson Fannon (sixth at 76), Austin Stephens (78) and either Ellie Howell (83) or Russell Haueisen (83) helped the Grizzlies shoot 312, trailing only Cosby (303). Manchester (319), Thomas Dale (325), Landstown (326), L.C. Bird (343), Western Branch (352) and J.R. Tucker (360) completed the field.
Landstown was paced by 81s from Rachel Warren and Anthony Lowe. Bryce DeRaps’ 86 led Western Branch.
Cosby’s Braden Sipe and Manchester’s Oliver Tanguay shared the medal with 2-under-par 70s.
Class 4 Region A
Jamestown won the team title with a 607 for 36 holes at Williamsburg National Golf Club, while Lafayette shot 649 for second place to join the Eagles in qualifying for the state tournament Oct. 14 at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.
The Eagles’ Aiden Connor dominated for the medal, firing a 5-under-par 139 to win by 11 strokes. Jamestown’s Levi Vannoy and Smithfield’s Tanner Brobst shared second place.
Brobst, Grafton’s Beck Christiansen (160) and Gloucester’s Fenn Scott (169) qualified for state individually as the lowest three scorers on non-qualifying teams.
Class 3 Region A
Tabb fired a 318 at Dogwood Trace Golf Course in Petersburg to capture the championship among six teams, while York (321) edged third-place New Kent (323) to gain a state bid.
Tabb’s Cooper Guldin (74) edged York’s Christian Martin (75) for the medal, and the Tigers’ Jack Houseknecht (78) placed third. New Kent’s Ryan Opett (78) and Bryce Hochman (80) and Lakeland’s Cam Chaney (80) earned state individual bids.
Class 2 Region A
Rylin Szymanski shot a 2-under 70 at Sleepy Hole in Suffolk to claim the individual medal and lead Windsor to the team title at 325. Randolph-Henry (329) slipped past third-place Poquoson (330) for a state berth.
Poquoson’s Landon Hermansky (73), Nandua’s Toryn Ibarra (76) and Lunenburg Central’s Parker Hite (77) played their way into the state field.
