Crash involving police closes all southbound lanes on Florida’s Turnpike near Sunrise Boulevard

A major crash involving multiple law enforcement agencies has shut down all southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike near Sunrise Boulevard in Broward County during rush hour Thursday evening, according to officials.

Florida Highway Patrol and the Broward Sheriff’s Office have not released details about what led up to the crash or the circumstances of the crash as of about 6 p.m.

BSO spokesperson Carey Codd said in an email that “there are several law enforcement agencies involved.”

Codd and FHP spokesperson Lt. Indiana Miranda said it is undecided which law enforcement agency will be leading the investigation.

Drivers are urged to use alternate routes by exiting at Commercial Boulevard “or avoiding the Turnpike entirely,” Miranda said. Traffic in the area is being rerouted to exit at Sunrise Boulevard. The Turnpike can be reentered south of Interstate 595.
