Crash on Route 100 in eastern Berks leaves 1 person dead

One person is dead after a crash Tuesday night on Route 100 in eastern Berks County, emergency officials said.

The Eastern Berks Fire Department along with area ambulance crews and state police from Reading responded at about 8 p.m. to the crash on southbound Route 100 and Niantic Road in Washington Township.

Personnel reported one driver was trapped in a car on top of a guide rail. A rescue crew pried open a door.

The Berks County coroner’s office was dispatched to the scene.

Fire police from Eastern Berks, Boyertown, Gilbertsville, and Earl Township fire companies closed Route 100 between Niantic and Barto Roads for nearly five hours to allow state police to reconstruct the crash.

The road was reopened shortly before 1:00 a.m.
