CT man accused of reckless driving and racing prior to crash on I-84

A West Haven man has been arrested on charges including reckless driving and racing in connection with a crash Sunday morning on Interstate 84 in Vernon, state police said.

Troopers from Troop C in Tolland responded to a reported two-car crash just before 9 a.m. Sunday on I-84 west near Exit 66 in Vernon, according to the Connecticut State Police.

State police said the 911 caller was involved in the collision and allegedly reported that he was racing another vehicle when he struck an uninvolved car.

Troopers spoke with both drivers at the scene, and no injuries were reported, according to state police.

The 911 caller was identified as 21-year-old Wayne Ferguson. Ferguson allegedly told state police that he was racing with another vehicle, whose driver was unknown to him. He claimed that he was traveling at speeds of 110-120 mph as he and the other vehicle were using all three lanes to pass other traffic, state police said.

Ferguson also allegedly said that while traveling at the high speeds, he attempted to pass a vehicle in the center lane and collided with another car which was not involved in the racing, according to state police.

According to Ferguson, the vehicle he was allegedly racing, identified as a black Infiniti by a witness, continued on I-84 west at a high rate of speed, state police said.

During the investigation, state police also determined that Ferguson’s vehicle was uninsured. Both vehicles involved in the collision were later towed due to damage, according to state police.

Ferguson was arrested and transported to Troop C where he was processed on charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle without minimum insurance, reckless driving, illegal racing on highway and failure to maintain proper lane on a limited access highway. He was later released from custody on a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear at Rockville Superior Court on Oct. 14, state police said.

Anyone with information about the black Infiniti and/or its driver at the time of the alleged racing incident is asked to contact Trooper Jarred Bolduc at Troop C at 860-896-3200 or by email at jarred.bolduc@ct.gov.
