CT man charged in crash that killed 84-year-old pedestrian in Norwalk

Police have charged a man who they say fatally struck an 84-year-old woman while driving a pickup truck in Norwalk in July.

Marc Owens, 56, of Norwalk turned himself in on Tuesday on charges of misconduct with a motor vehicle, distracted driving not by a cell phone and failure to yield to a pedestrian, according to Lt. Tomasz Podgorski of the Norwalk Police Department.

Podgorski said the charges stem from a crash on July 12 shortly after 10:15 a.m. when police received multiple 911 calls reporting that a pedestrian had been struck by a pickup truck in the area of 133 Connecticut Ave. Emergency crews responded to the area and found the pedestrian, who was identified as Josephine Pimpinella, suffering from serious injuries.

According to Podgorski, crews gave her medical treatment before she was taken to Norwalk Hospital where she died of her injuries.

Police found that Pimpinella was crossing a driveway when she was struck by a pickup truck being operated by Owens, according to Podgorski. The police department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and canvassed the area along with detectives in search of witnesses and surveillance footage.

The Crash Reconstruction Unit officers conducted an accident reconstruction analysis based on forensic findings, which included evidence gathered at the scene, Podgorski said. Investigators obtained a warrant charging Owens in the crash.

Owens’ bond was set at $50,000, and he is scheduled to appear before a judge on Nov. 10.
