A man was arrested on a DUI charge on Sunday after police said he veered off the road and struck five parked vehicles and a building in Waterbury.
The series of crashes occurred on Thomaston Avenue shortly before 7:20 p.m. when officers received the report of a six-vehicle crash and responded to the area, according to Sgt. Joseph Morais of the Waterbury Police Department.
Police found that a white Ford Econovan being driven by 28-year-old Diego Quituizaca-Matailo of Waterbury was headed north when it veered into five parked vehicles and continued straight, striking a building at 1268 Thomaston Ave., Morais said. The van then came to a stop.
According to Morais, none of the vehicles that were hit were occupied. They were parked in front of the building that was struck.
Morais said Quituizaca-Matailo and a passenger in the van declined medical treatment and did not appear to be suffering from any apparent injuries.
There was no structural damage found to the building, according to Morais.
Officers alleged that Quituizaca-Matailo appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, Morais said. He allegedly failed three field sobriety tests and was taken into custody, according to Morais.
Quituizaca-Matailo faces charges of operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, illegal operation of a motor vehicle under suspension and failure to drive in the proper lane.
