A man has been found guilty of manslaughter and related charges in the shooting death of a woman at a block party in Stamford in 2020.

Ian Evans, 33, of Bridgeport was found not guilty of murder in the shooting death of 35-year-old Shernetta Dunmore of Stamford, according to the state Division of Criminal Justice.

The verdict was returned by a jury in Stamford Superior Court on Wednesday following a trial. Evans was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter with a firearm, first-degree assault and criminal use of a firearm in connection with the shooting, which also injured two others, officials said.

Woman dead, men injured after shootout at outdoor party in Stamford, police say

According to officials, Dunmore was at a block party in a parking lot on Ursula Place on Sept. 20, 2020, when a barrage of gunfire went off. Though she was not the target of the shooting, she was struck by multiple bullets before she collapsed. Dunmore was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

There were about 40 people gathered in the area of Dale Street and Ursula Place at the time, police said, but most left when shots rang out.

According to police, the group first gathered at Cummings Park for an end-of-summer, outdoor party. When the park closed for the night, the group got kicked out and moved to the new location at Dale Street and Ursula Place, near the Ursula Place Townhouses.

About 12:15 a.m., numerous 911 calls came in reporting shots fired, and arriving officers found Dunmore in a nearby parking lot, police said. She was treated by medics and taken to the hospital.

According to the DCJ, video surveillance near the parking lot showed Evans firing multiple shots in the direction of Dunmore. Authorities believe his gunfire struck her and a second person who ultimately survived.

Investigators believe a second shooter fired shots during the incident, which injured a third person, but the other shooter was not able to be identified.

Evans remains held on a $2 million bond while he awaits sentencing, which is scheduled for Nov. 7.
