CT man convicted of sexually assaulting woman in Coventry in 2020

A man whose criminal history includes a public indecency charge has been convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in Coventry in 2020.

Deric A. Clarke, 43, of Waterbury was found guilty of first-degree sexual assault following a trial in Superior Court in Rockville, according to the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice. The verdict was returned on Thursday.

DCJ officials said the evidence at trial showed that Clarke sexually assaulted the woman at a home in Coventry. According to previous reports, the assault occurred on Jan. 17, 2020, and involved a woman who was known to him.

The evidence at trial included witnesses testimony and DNA, officials said.

At the time of the assault, Clarke was on probation after being convicted of public indecency and breach of peace, officials said.

Superior Court Judge Tejas Bhatt made a finding that Clarke violated his probation conditions based on the evidence in the sexual assault trial, officials said.

Clarke remains held on a $425,000 bond while he awaits sentencing, which has been scheduled for Dec. 5.

The case was prosecuted by Craig P. Nowak, state’s attorney for the Tolland Judicial District, with assistance from Inspector John DiVenere, the Manchester and Coventry Police Departments and Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Forensic Science Laboratory.
