A Hartford convicted sex offender received a 10-year federal prison sentence for possessing thousands of child sexual abuse videos and images.
Jonathan Williams, 34, was sentenced Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Vernon D. Oliver in Hartford to 120 months in prison followed by 20 years of supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Homeland Security Investigations was investigating a network of individuals using private groups on an internet chat application to share images and videos of child sexual abuse, court records show.
According to court records, the investigation revealed that an account associated with Williams was reportedly an active member of one of the groups. Court records show that Williams was convicted of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor in North Carolina in 2015.
Investigators conducted a court-authorized search of Williams’ home on June 1, 2023. According to court records, he was arrested on that date after a preliminary review of his laptop reportedly revealed videos of child sex abuse.
“Subsequent analysis of his laptop and iPhone revealed more than 1,500 videos and 7,000 images depicting child pornography, including videos and images of sadistic and masochistic conduct and other depictions of violence and sexual abuse of infants and toddlers,” investigators said.
Williams has been detained since his arrest.
“The penalties in this matter were enhanced based on Williams’ prior conviction in North Carolina,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
The case was investigated by HSI with the assistance of the Connecticut Center for Digital Investigations, the Connecticut State Police, and the Hartford and Westport Police Departments.
