CT town mourns passing of former chief of police; services planned

The Westport Police Department is mourning the passing of its former chief of police, officials said.

The town’s former Chief of Police Alfred Fiore died on Saturday morning.

Fiore was a native of Shelton, but became a longtime resident of the town of Westport, according to the town’s police department.

“Chief Fiore once spoke of how his interest in law enforcement began in his high school years, where many of his football coaches were employed as police officers. This budding intrigue in their jobs ultimately led him to pursue an education in the field. He would then go on to graduate from the University of New Haven with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. He would also later attend and graduate from Session 153 of the Federal
Bureau of Investigations’ National Academy for Law Enforcement Leaders in 1988,” the department said in a statement.

Fiore was sworn in as an officer of the Westport Police Department in 1978. He quickly rose through the various ranks, and during his tenure
held many titles including detective, sergeant, inspector and deputy chief before ultimately assuming the top command role of police chief, the department said.

He was officially appointed to the rank of chief of police on Jan. 1, 2004, succeeding then Chief William Chiarenzelli. He served in the town’s top law enforcement role with distinction, until his retirement on June 1, 2010, according to police officials.

“Chief Fiore will always be remembered fondly for his dedication to duty and unwavering support of the men and women of the Westport Police Department as well as the community he so fondly called his home. Many of the officers hired during his tenure as Chief still serve Westport today in various roles and we will remain forever grateful for his leadership, his example and his guidance,” the department said.

Memorial services are currently in the process of being finalized and have not yet been announced.
