Democratic political staffer charged with distributing child pornography

A young political strategist who worked with several Richmond-area Democrats is facing federal criminal charges for allegedly distributing child pornography.

In court documents filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, federal prosecutors allege that Randon Sprinkle messaged an undercover FBI officer on an online dating application that caters to the LGBTQ community. Sprinkle then allegedly sent graphic child sexual abuse material to the officer and discussed arranging a sexual encounter with the undercover officer and a minor.

Officers matched the profile picture of the dating application to Sprinkle’s account on X. In October, FBI agents searched Sprinkle’s home in Richmond, where they say they found 42 unique files containing graphic material on his iPhone and laptop. Sprinkle was arrested Dec. 14.

Sprinkle worked on the campaigns of several Richmond council members and on the campaign of state Sen. Jennifer Boysko, D-Fairfax, according to information from the Virginia Public Access Project. Last year, he attended the Democratic National Convention as a delegate from Virginia.

Sprinkle also worked as a regional political director for Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan’s 2020 campaign for governor and as finance director for the Democratic Party of Virginia, according to VPAP.

The Democratic Party of Virginia did not immediately return a request for comment on Saturday morning.

“Coming from senior posts within VA Dems, Mr. Sprinkle did advance work for the campaign alongside consulting for other candidates during the off-cycle in the months leading up to launch,” said Tom Barbour, whose campaign for Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney contracted with Sprinkle earlier this year.

“These allegations are both shocking and tragic,” Barbour said.

A preliminary hearing in Sprinkle’s case is scheduled for Monday.
