DeSantis sticks us with $218 million ‘Alcatraz’ bill | Letters to the editor

Florida taxpayers are on the hook for $218 million, thanks to what the state spent in its haste to transform a training airport into a detention center in the Everglades.

This fiasco only reinforces the perception of the Sunshine State as “Flori-duh.”

Creeping authoritarianism

Who would have thought: Three dictators in power at once. Trump, Netanyahu and Putin are cut from the same cloth — three self-absorbed leaders of the U.S., Israel and Russia.

Trump welcomes Putin with a red carpet and implies for the hundredth time that the war with Ukraine will end in a week. Netanyahu only wants bloodshed and hunger.

Our twice-impeached, indicted 34 times and found guilty “leader” tries to broker deals. All Trump can do with the help of all his lackies is send the National Guard to Washington and threaten other cities with the same if they don’t bow down and kiss his feet.

Trump doesn’t have to worry about Florida and Texas not bowing to his every command: He has unwavering support from two of the most uncaring governors ever elected. Ron DeSantis’ worries are to make sure that all Pride cross-walks are removed and drag shows are stopped.

Congratulations to our illustrious governor for spending $218 million on the illegal venture known as Alligator Alcatraz and another $15-20 million to close it down.

Give Trump a chance

It seems that all letters to the editor are from people who say Trump is not a good president.

Those same people apparently felt life was better under a president who suffered dementia and couldn’t stay up after 10 p.m. They also were looking forward to his successor, a woman who couldn’t put two words together.

This is very strange. Now we have a president who’s actually doing things for this country, and people won’t give him a chance. It makes no sense to me.

The obsession with rainbows

Gov. Ron DeSantis and his transportation secretary, Jared Perdue, have lately demanded removal of rainbow crosswalks, including at the Pulse memorial in Orlando.

They argue that our streets should not be politicized. But that ship has sailed, with major roads named for Republican presidents and the recent push to name one after Trump.

You wonder why there’s an obsession with rainbow crossings — and lest we forget, drag shows. In the 2024 legislative session, more than 20 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced; only one was signed into law.

Why such interest in the LGBTQ+ community? If this is about protecting children, Catholic priests have a more documented history as child predators. It can’t be about “Christian” values where the theme is love and compassion, so maybe it’s just hatred and ignorance of people who are different.

Or are they so insecure about their own sexuality that they want to eliminate any risk of joining the LGBTQ+ community? It’s the only reason that makes sense.

Trump and Robert E. Lee

I find it remarkable that the Trump administration is rehanging a portrait of Robert E. Lee, with his horse being held by a slave, at West Point.

Lee’s armies probably killed more Americans than any general in U.S. history. Besides, I thought that Trump hated “losers.”
