DeVeaux’s 40 points lead Virginia Wesleyan

Omari DeVeaux poured in 40 points Saturday to spark Virginia Wesleyan to an 81-76 victory at Lynchburg in a regular-season finale.

The Marlins (18-7, 13-3) ensured themselves no worse than outright second place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference by overcoming the Hornets (14-11, 9-7). They entered the day trailing first-place Randolph-Macon by one game.

DeVeaux was 13 of 26 from the field, including 3 of 10 from 3-point range, and 11 of 13 at the free-throw line for VWU, which trailed 69-66 with 5:27 remaining after leading by as many as 12 in the first half.

T.J. East had 13 points and seven rebounds for VWU, and Amari Moorer had eight points and eight rebounds. The Marlins will be at home for a conference tournament quarterfinal.

Jamarcus Brown had 29 points and seven rebounds for Lynchburg.

Stony Brook 79, Hampton 72: Erik Pratt’s 34 points propelled the Seawolves (17-11, 9-6 Coastal Athletic Association) past the Pirates (12-16, 6-9) in New York. It was HU’s third consecutive defeat.

Michael Eley, who has endured an injury-plagued season, gave HU hope with 17 points in 19 minutes off the bench.

Xzavier Long had 12 points, four rebounds and four steals for Hampton, while Kody Williams had 12 points and six assists and Etienne Strothers had 11 points.

Pratt was 11 of 15 from the field, hitting all four of his 3-point tries, and 8 of 11 on free throws. Richard Goods added 15 points and Andrej Shoshkikj had 14.

Western Kentucky 94, Liberty 73: The Flames’ winning streak emphatically ended at 17 with a home loss to the Hilltoppers.

Grant Newell scored 21 for WKU (16-11, 9-7), which handed Liberty its first loss in Lynchburg all season. Colin Porter led Liberty (23-4, 15-1) with 20.

Regent 104, Johnson & Wales-Charlotte 86: The Royals (6-19) extended their winning streak to three by beating the visiting Wildcats (5-19) in a clash of two of the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference’s newest members.

Darrin Clark had 25 points, seven assists and five rebounds for Regent. Chauncey Gilliam had 24 points, 19 rebounds and two blocks.

Western Carolina 81, VMI 62: Cord Stansberry’s 17 points and 11 rebounds in Lexington helped the Catamounts (12-15, 8-8 Southern Conference) deal VMI (6-23, 1-15) its 14th straight loss.

Walker Andrews led the Keydets by finishing with 13 points off the bench. TJ Johnson added 12 points and seven rebounds.

James Madison 80, Georgia State 65: Cliff Davis scored 27 points as the Dukes (16-13, 8-8 Sun Belt) extended their winning streak to five by beating the Panthers (10-19, 7-9) in Atlanta.

Longwood 107, Charleston Southern 96, 2OT: Jacoi Hutchinson scored 36 points as the Lancers (15-15, 7-8 Big South) won a double-overtime epic in South Carolina over the Buccaneers (13-16, 4-10). He sank all 11 of his free throws and got 22 points of support from Redd Thompson Jr.

A’lahn Sumler led CSU with 29 points.

Navy 81, Army 63: Austin Benigni’s 27 points helped the Patriot League regular-season champion Midshipmen (23-6, 15-1) win their 11th consecutive game. Aidan Kehoe had 16 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks, and Jinwoo Kim had 13 points for Navy.

Jaxson Bell finished with 17 points for the host Black Knights (11-18, 5-11).

UNLV 91, Air Force 66: In their first game after coach Joe Scott’s exit, the Falcons (3-24, 0-16) fell to the visiting Rebels (14-13, 9-7). Assistant coach Jon Jordan replaced Scott, who was fired Friday after previously suspending him indefinitely for an investigation into how he treated the cadet-athletes.
