In a battle between the area’s two most historic high school football programs, both Easton and Liberty were looking to end long droughts without a district championship appearance.
With a quick start and a strong finish, the top-seeded Red Rovers pulled away to defeat No. 4 Liberty 38-20 and reach their first District 11 championship game since 2014.
They’ll attempt to win their first district title in 15 years next week in a battle of unbeatens with Parkland (12-0) on Friday night at a site and time to be determined.
Easton jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter behind a Noah Borluca 31-yard field goal, a 49-yard touchdown run by Trevon Tyler on his first carry of the game and a 15-yard score by Chris Martinez to assert control. In a thrilling 23-20 regular-season battle, the Red Rovers claimed an identical early lead before Liberty scored the next 20 points to take a late lead.
It looked like coach Shawn Daignault’s group had a similar trick up their sleeve with back-to-back touchdowns by Zyaire Davis to pull within 17-13 with 10 minutes still remaining in the third quarter.
Tyler had other ideas.
The senior two-way star took the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown to recapture a two-possession lead that his team never squandered.
A pair of interceptions by Andrew Biddle and two more touchdown runs by quarterback Cole Ordway, who is now one away from tying the school record for the most in a season, extended the lead and gave the Red Rovers the chance at their first district championship since 2010.
Ordway led the way with 177 rushing yards while Martinez added 127 and Tyler compiled 72 for a dominant 376 yards on the ground for the district’s top seed.
Davis capped a sensational junior season with nine catches for 170 yards and 2 TDs for the Hurricanes.
