Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill in line to play Week 1; RB Jaylen Wright to miss time

MIAMI GARDENS — The oblique injury hindering star Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill isn’t expected to keep him off the field for the team’s regular season opener.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Hill is looking “great” to play Sept. 7 at the Indianapolis Colts.

Hill will take part in portions of the team’s Thursday practice, the Dolphins’ last session before it prepares specifically for the Colts next week.

“He’ll do some stuff (Thursday),” McDaniel said. “We’ve been making sure he was going to have no setbacks for next week, and so, yeah, we look good — looks great.”

Hill first had the oblique ailment surface Aug. 6, missing from the day’s practice in Miami Gardens before the Dolphins traveled to Chicago later that evening.

Along with Hill, running back De’Von Achane and tackle Austin Jackson are in a good position to play in more than a week in Indianapolis.

The same can be said for safety Ashtyn Davis, who suffered a lower-leg injury early in camp and has not returned to meaningful practice reps in about a month since. McDaniel relayed Davis’ eagerness to play Week 1 as he was set to practice Thursday.

“I would say he’s in play,” McDaniel said, “because if I didn’t, he would punch me in the face.”

Meanwhile, Dolphins running back Jaylen Wright will miss some time with his lower-extremity injury suffered in last week’s joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

McDaniel said Thursday Wright had a “small procedure,” but the second-year tailback is nowhere near at risk of missing the rest of the season, according to the Dolphins coach.

Wright could be in play to return within the month of September, McDaniel said.

He was not placed on injured reserve to start the season, which would have automatically sidelined him for the first four games.

With Wright set to miss time, the Dolphins have Achane and rookie Ollie Gordon II as available running backs on the active roster. The team is bringing back Jeff Wilson on the practice squad and also signing JaMycal Hasty, who was cut by the New England Patriots, as third running back options to be elevated early in the season.

Alternate uniforms

The Dolphins unveiled a new “Rivalries” uniform Thursday morning that will be worn at the Week 4 home Monday night game against the New York Jets on Sept. 29.

The new alternate jerseys feature a black or very dark navy blue base with the team’s traditional aqua on the numbers and sleeves. The last names on the back of the jerseys, along with “Miami” over the numbers on the front, are in orange.

The helmets similarly have the darker predominant color, while the logo on the helmet features aqua, along with the stripe down the middle, which has orange lining.

A leak of the uniform reveal, which was officially announced a little after 10 a.m. Thursday, was exposed Wednesday evening as social media accounts had screenshots of Dolphins players posing in the new garb on the team’s official app before the photos were taken down.

The official unveiling was a quick artificial intelligence video taking a viewer underwater, seeing a dolphin swim by and then featuring wide receiver Jaylen Waddle’s likeness in the uniform.
