Driver in critical condition after allegedly fleeing a hit and run then striking several trees

One person is in critical condition following multiple crashes in two towns on Saturday night.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m., the Cheshire Police Department received a call from “a motorist whose vehicle had just been struck by a white color 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe at the intersection of Knotter Dr and Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike in Southington.”

The caller said that after the crash, the Tahoe sped off into Cheshire and they lost sight of the vehicle east on West Johnson Ave, toward Highland Avenue, according to Cheshire Police’s social media post.

Shortly after, the caller found the Tahoe in front of 181 West Johnson Avenue involved in a single-car crash and the driver was out of the vehicle and on the ground.

The Cheshire Police Department, Cheshire Fire Department and Trinity Ambulance responded. The driver was provided medical assistance and was the lone person in the Tahoe. The driver was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital, according to Cheshire Police.

According to police, the preliminary investigation found the Tahoe allegedly “was traveling eastbound on West Johnson Avenue at a high rate of speed and crossed the double yellow lines and into the westbound lane where it left the north side of the roadway in front of 191 West Johnson Avenue.”

Police said the Tahoe struck several trees off the roadway and was ejected from the vehicle. The person suffered “life-threatening injuries” and was listed at critical condition as of Sunday morning.

The Southington Police Department is investigating the initial crash and Cheshire Police is investigating the second.

The Naugatuck Valley Collision Investigation Team also responded to the crash scene in Cheshire.
