Elijah Jamison scores 30 to spark Norfolk State at Chris Paul HBCU Classic

Elijah Jamison scored 30 points to guide Norfolk State past Jackson State 82-72 Friday at the Chris Paul HBCU Classic in College Park, Georgia, near Atlanta.

Jamison was efficient, shooting 8 for 10 (5 for 5 from 3-point range) and 9 of 9 from the free-throw line for the Spartans (5-8). Anthony McComb III scored 19 points and added five rebounds. Adrean Newton had seven assists and finished 3 of 4 from the field to finish with 10 points.

Daeshun Ruffin led the Tigers (1-11) with 25 points and six assists. Jayme Mitchell added 19 points and six rebounds, and Dorian McMillian also recorded 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.

The Spartans took a 42-29 lead after a 20-4 run over a seven-minute stretch in the first half. Their lead ballooned to 22 after a 10-0 run in the second half.

Grambling State 81, Hampton 72: Grambling won in the early game in College Park, Georgia, leaving the Pirates (6-7) with a split of two games in the Chris Paul HBCU Classic.

Hampton beat Jackson State on Thursday. But Grambling (5-6) scored eight consecutive points for a 10-5 lead against the Pirates and was in front thereafter, finishing 2-0 at the event near Atlanta.

Antonio Munoz scored 23 points and Jamil Muttilib 19 for the Tigers, who shot 57% (27 of 47). For the Pirates, Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt scored 22, hitting all eight of his free throws, and Xzavier Long had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Christian Watson added 10 points.

Emory 98, Christopher Newport 65: The Eagles (6-1), ranked seventh, never trailed at the Jay Bilas Classic in Johnson & Wales-Charlotte’s arena as they easily ended a seven-game winning streak for the Captains (8-3). Emory avenged a loss last season at Freeman Center, when CNU knocked off the then top-ranked Eagles.

Only one Captain scored in double digits: junior Milyan Smith-Walker, who posted a career-high 11 points in just less than 11 minutes of action. Emory shot 48% to CNU’s 35%.

Ethan Fauss scored 24 points and Ben Pearce 17 for Emory.

Virginia Peninsula Community College 78, Pennsylvania Highlands CC 77: The Gators (10-5) edged their visitors at SafeHaven Community Center in Newport News.

Florida State 96, Mississippi Valley State 49: Cam Miles, Robert McCray V and Chauncey Wiggins combined for 44 points as FSU (6-6) romped in Tallahassee.

Wiggins led with 16 points off the bench, while Miles had 15 and McCray 13. The Seminoles jumped out to a 54-17 lead over the Delta Devils (1-11), closing the first half on a 15-2 run.

Navy 88, Coppin State 55: The Midshipmen (7-5) breezed past the Eagles (2-13) in Annapolis, Maryland, as Aidan Kehoe scored 22 points and Austin Benigni 20 for Navy. Kehoe had 12 rebounds, and Benigni had six assists and five rebounds. Benigni was 12 of 14 at the free-throw line, helping Navy shoot 24 of 29.

For Coppin State, Hussain Williams scored 13 and Torrin Andrews 11.

Late Thursday

Grambling State 80, Norfolk State 68: In Thursday’s second game of the Chris Paul HBCU Classic, Antonio Munoz’s 22 points and five rebounds helped the Tigers (4-6) prevail before 535 at Gateway Center Arena.

Grambling went ahead 9-0. After NSU pulled to 11-8, the Tigers scored 13 consecutive points to move ahead 24-8 and remained ahead by double figures thereafter.

Rickey Ballard shot 5 of 8 from the field, including 4 for 6 from 3-point range, and went 5 for 6 from the line to add 19 points. Jamil Muttilib finished with 13 points for the Tigers, who snapped a five-game slide.

The Spartans (4-8) were led by Elijah Jamison, who finished with 26 points, six rebounds and two steals. Devon Ellis added 12 points and seven rebounds for NSU. Anthony McComb III finished with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.

William & Mary 96, Radford 83: The Tribe’s freewheeling style produced six double-digit scorers and another victory at Kaplan Arena for a 9-3 record, though the Highlanders (5-8) led for most of the first half. It marked the first time since 1982-83 that the Tribe won at least nine nonconference games.

Senior guard Kyle Pulliam had 22 points (including the 1,000th of his college career), seven rebounds and three steals before a crowd of 2,790. The 22 points were the most Pulliam has scored in his two years with the Tribe. Coupled with his two-year career for St. Thomas Aquinas, he surpassed the 1,000-point mark.

W&M sank 27 of 31 free throws. Reese Miller scored 17 points while shooting 6 for 13 (2 for 7 from 3-point range) and 3 of 3 from the free-throw line. Chase Lowe shot 3 of 6 from the field and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line to finish with 12 points. Jo’el Emanuel, Kilian Brockhoff and Finn Lally added 10 points apiece.

Dennis Parker Jr. led Radford with 26 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Still, that was nowhere near the Radford- and Big South-record 53 points the Richmond-area native and North Carolina State transfer had scored in the Highlanders’ last game, a 107-77 victory over Coppin State.

Jaylon Johnson added 19 points, four assists and two steals for Radford.

William & Mary took the lead for good with 50 seconds remaining in the first half, during which Pulliam racked up 13 points. Miller scored 17 points in the second half.

Virginia Peninsula Community College 79, Monroe University-Bronx 68: Ky’Saan Bevier scored 15 points, Chris Cyrus 14, Emmanuel Angila 12 and Jordan Watlington 12 for the Gators (9-5) in their victory at SafeHaven Community Center in Newport News. Watlington added 12 points, five assists and five steals.

Andi Metaliaj had 17 points and seven rebounds for Monroe.

VCU 105, American 83: Terrence Hill Jr. came off the bench to produce 17 points and five rebounds for the Rams (8-4) as they won at Siegel Center.

Lazar Djokovic finished 6 of 7 from the field to add 15 points. Nyk Lewis shot 4 of 9 from the field and went 5 for 5 from the free-throw line to finish with 14 points.

The Eagles (7-5) were led in scoring by Wyatt Nausadis, who finished with 17 points. Geoff Sprouse added 16 points and five assists, and Julen Iturbe also had 15 points.

VCU led 48-35 at the break and pulled away with an 11-3 run in the second half to go ahead by 24.

No. 25 Georgia 112, Western Carolina 82: Jeremiah Wilkinson tied his career high with 26 points in the Bulldogs’ first game after moving into the AP Top 25. Georgia (10-1) leads the nation at 98.3 points per game.

Somto Cyril had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for the Bulldogs. Marcus “Smurf” Millender added 17 points to subdue the Catamounts (4-7).

Women

William & Mary 81, Stetson 75: Natalie Fox and Monet Dance scored 20 points apiece as the Tribe (6-4) rallied past the Hatters (6-3) in DeLand, Florida, to extend its winning streak to five. Fox scored her career high, and Dance had four assists.

Also for W&M, Jana Sallman had 19 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.

W&M, which trailed 21-14, went ahead 72-70 with 2:12 to go on a pair of Dance free throws and remained in front. The Tribe will return to Stetson’s arena at 1:15 p.m. Saturday to face Bethune-Cookman.

Christopher Newport 70, York 50: The Captains (10-2), ranked 17th in the Division III coaches’ poll, held the Spartans to just 13 points in the middle two quarters on their way to victory on the opening night of the inaugural Nelson Hinson Invitational at Freeman Center.

Fourteen Captains scored as CNU earned a berth in Saturday’s 3 p.m. championship game against Catholic. Maryville, which fell 67-46 to Catholic in the day’s first game, will play for third place at 1 p.m.

Elizabeth Creed had 11 points for CNU, while Jessica Dornak had seven rebounds and 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Caitlin Crump and McKenna Snively each added nine-point performances, and Sydney Richardson had eight.

Georgia 72, VCU 53: Trinity Turner scored 23 points for the Bulldogs (12-0). They led just 47-45 with 9:11 in the fourth quarter but closed the game on a 25-8 run to pull away at the Henrico Sports & Events Center.

Patricia Augustin led VCU (4-8) with 15 points, and Katarina Kneževic had nine points, four rebounds and four assists.
It was the opening night of the multiteam 4 Tha Culture Holiday Classic.

No. 7 Maryland 98, Central Connecticut State 30: Yarden Garzon scored 12 of her 25 points in the first quarter for the Terrapins (13-0) before the screaming kids in attendance for Maryland’s annual Field Trip Day game. The Blue Devils fell to 0-11.

Late Thursday

No. 21 Ohio State 79, Norfolk State 45: After falling behind 4-0 in Columbus, the Buckeyes (10-1) moved ahead 20-10 by the first quarter’s end and beat the Spartans.

Jasha Clinton paced NSU with 18 points, shooting 6 of 16 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line while adding three assists and two steals. Ciara Bailey was the other Spartan in double figures, recording her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Kylee Kitts scored 13 points, Jaloni Cambridge added 11 and Ohio State rolled to its eighth straight win. Kitts grabbed 10 rebounds to go with two steals and two blocks, helping the Buckeyes to a 55-32 edge on the boards. Cambridge had eight rebounds and two steals.

Virginia Tech 79, Florida State 54: Mackenzie Nelson and Mel Daley posted their first career double-doubles in Tallahassee, and the 25-point victory by the Hokies (10-3, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) over FSU (4-9, 0-2) was their largest margin of victory in a series that started in 1979.

It was 26-12 after one quarter and never in doubt.

No. 3 South Carolina 103, South Florida 44: Joyce Edwards scored a career-high 34 points on 13-of-14 shooting in Tampa. Her previous career best was 29 points, which she scored last Sunday in a 95-55 win over Penn State.

Tessa Johnson added 16 points, Ta’Niya Latson scored 15 and Madina Okot had 12 points and 10 rebounds for South Carolina (11-1), which shot 62% (44 of 70). Jelena Bulajic scored 10 for USF (6-6).

Randolph 71, Regent 46: The WildCats (6-4) outplayed the Royals (1-10) in Lynchburg. Regent’s My’Angel Carter and Mikaylah Telfer scored 12 points each. Carter had 15 rebounds and Telfer 14.

For Randolph, Maddie Pabon had 16 points and Manor High graduate Taniya Jackson 14. Pariz Minor, from Norview, added six points on 3-for-3 shooting and four rebounds.
