Elon women stifle Norfolk State

Norfolk State’s women continued to absorb lessons in the final tuneup before their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule begins, falling 58-41 Sunday at Elon.

Da’Brya Clark led the Spartans (5-10) with 14 points, while Jasha Clinton added six points and three steals. Ciara Bailey grabbed five rebounds.

LaNae’ Corbett and Tyana Walker had 14 points apiece for Elon, which limited the Spartans to 12 second-half points.

NSU overcame a 12-0 deficit to pull even at 18, fell behind 25-18, then surged ahead 29-28 by halftime.

Two 3-pointers in the final two minutes of the third quarter put Elon ahead 43-35, and the Phoenix (4-7) scored the first 10 points of the fourth.

Virginia Tech 79, Radford 47: The Hokies (11-3) beat the Highlanders (8-7) at Cassell Coliseum as Carys Baker led all players with 23 points, a season-high, for her third straight 20-point performance. She knocked down four of the Hokies’ five 3-pointers.

Also for Tech, Mel Daley had 15 points, Kilah Freelon contributed 17 rebounds and nine points, and Mackenzie Nelson tallied seven assists.

Georgia Simonsen paced Radford with 15 points, and Catholic High graduate Cate Carlson had eight points and five rebounds.

Richmond 70, Penn State 54: Maggie Doogan compiled 30 points and Ally Sweeney had 20 points and six assists as the Spiders (11-3) downed the Nittany Lions (7-5) in the 4 Tha Culture Classic at Henrico Sports & Events Center.

Gracie Merkle scored 15 for Penn State.

Longwood 98, UNC Wilmington 72: The Lancers (9-4) dominated the Seahawks (3-7) in Farmville behind Jasmine Peaks’ 17 points and 16 apiece from Malea Brown and Otaifo Esenabhalu.

No. 2 Texas 70, South Dakota State 51: Jordan Lee had 17 points and four steals for the Longhorns (14-0), who visited Brookings, South Dakota, in a home-and-home series with the Summit League power after needing to fill out last year’s schedule, coach Vic Schaefer said.

Madison Booker had 14 points and nine rebounds for Texas. Mahli Abdouch scored 10 for SDSU, but the freshman guard committed 11 of the Jackrabbits’ 23 turnovers.

No. 5 LSU 110, UT Arlington 45: Freshman Grace Knox had season highs of 25 points and 12 rebounds for LSU (13-0) in a home victory. The Tigers used swarming defense and relentless rebounding to dismantle the Mavericks (6-6).

No. 6 Michigan 97, Oakland 54: Olivia Olson had 23 points, Syla Swords 18 and Brooke Quarles Daniels 11 for the Wolverines (10-1) in Ann Arbor.

Lianna Baxter led the Golden Grizzlies (3-9), who have lost five straight, with 14 points.

No. 10 Iowa State 79, Kansas 76: Kenzie Hare hit the winning 3-point shot as time expired, Audi Crooks scored 41 points and the Cyclones (13-0, 1-0 Big 12) won at home in Ames. They fended off a late run by Kansas (10-3, 0-1) when Hare took a pass from Addy Brown and shot from a corner for her only points of the day.

Crooks, who leads the nation in scoring, shot 19 of 28 from the field while going over 40 points for the third time this season. S’Mya Nichols led Kansas with 29, including 12 in the fourth quarter.
