Emmaus’ Kyan DeLong is 3A medalist at District 11 golf qualifier

Emmaus’ Kyan DeLong shot a pair 1-over-par 37s Monday at Northampton Country Club to lead the group Class 3A qualifiers for next week’s District 11 Golf Championship.

DeLong made birdie on Nos. 5 and 7 to help offset three early bogeys. He then birdies the par-5 15th after back-to-back bogeys on the back side to finish at 74, two shots ahead of Liberty’s Andrew Erfle and Parkland’s Carter Willis.

Parkland’s Charlie Gold, Southern Lehigh’s Sean Brogan and Emmaus’ Silas Wellhoener all shot 77s. Top 30 and ties advance to the district tournament, which is Sept. 30 at The Steel Club in Hellertown.

Notre Dame-Green Pond’s Simon Weed shot a 7-over 79 to lead the 2A qualifiers. He picked up a birdie on the par-4 third hole.

Top 18 and ties move on to next week’s district competition. Palmerton’s Joey Solt was second with an 83.

None of the five girls hit the qualifying score of 110.

Moravian Academy’s Mara Dubacher will be chasing history next week. She is bidding to become the fourth District 11 golfer, boy or girl, to win four district titles. Northampton’s Beth Marushak, Allentown Central Catholic’s Franca Hurtado and Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg’s William Mirams were the first three to do it.

Other important dates: The District 11 2A and 3A team champions will participate in the PIAA subregional round on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at sites TBA.

The PIAA Golf Championships are Monday-Wednesday, Oct. 20-22, at Penn State’s Blue and White courses. The state individual competition is a 36-hole event on Oct. 20-21. The team tournament is 18 holes on Oct. 22.
