Re: English-only rule is driven by divisive politics, Editorial, Feb. 6
Florida’s move to restrict driver’s license tests to English only is both stupid and racist.
It will only encourage non-English speakers to drive without a license, which also means they will be uninsured.
Surely that will make Florida roads even more dangerous than they already are.
Except for Native Americans, we are a nation of immigrants. Immigrants are a vital part of our society and our economy. We are better for them.
The racism that drives the MAGA party is apparent in all their policies and their support from the likes of the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, Unite the Right and all the other Nazi sympathizers they embrace. They can’t stand the fact that they are outnumbered by the beautiful blends of cultures and skin colors that make America great.

Insensitive and stupid
The only result of an English-only driving test will be millions of unlicensed and uninsured drivers on our roads.
This requirement is complete folly, not to mention insensitive and just plain stupid (which, I must admit, is not antithetical to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ feelings about immigrants).
Repeal this insanity and restore order to our streets!

Help all understand
Driving tests must be provided in Spanish and Haitian Creole, so that all community members can understand and participate in the testing process. Language proficiency is not the primary skill being tested.
Drivers must understand traffic laws and law enforcement instructions.

A failure to communicate
Florida driving tests should be in English only, especially for people who live here permanently, not temporarily. My relatives had to assimilate, which required learning English to live and work here.
At age 73, I have witnessed people in Florida all my life who either speak very little English and can’t communicate or have such severe accents that people with normal hearing or mild hearing loss cannot understand them. This goes for immigrants, as well as people born here.
Some people can speak and read English well enough to be understood, but there’s a communication problem sometimes with them understanding English properly. They miss things, so even though you are both speaking English, the person to whom English is not their first language really does not understand. In my professional career, I found this so often. It was frustrating.

Learn the language
Anyone should need to understand English to drive in the USA!
FYI, I have just cancelled my subscription to your liberal rag. Your paper hates our president so bad, you disgust me. You forget: He won!

A matter of safety
I agree that prople need to be able to read signs to drive safely and for the safety of others.

Trump’s mini-me
I don’t agree. It’s just another example of our governor mini-me of Trump, and his band of loyalists, trying to please King Trump.
