Fall is here, and so is rain in the forecast in the Lehigh Valley

Rain could fall most days this week in the Lehigh Valley during what has been a fairly dry month for the area.

Monday will be dry, but there is a chance of rain every other day through the weekend, although forecasters do not anticipate much accumulation from any of the possible showers this week. Most days less than half an inch of rain is expected.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey, said Monday should be clear, but the rest of the week should be “unsettled,” while several systems pass through the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas.

Thursday has the highest chance of rain at 70%. The weather service said there is a chance of showers and a thunderstorm that night. They noted that recent dryness would limit flooding.

There is 50% chance of rain Tuesday, followed by a 40% chance Wednesday. Forecasters said there is a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday, and there could be more rain over the weekend, but specifics on that are not yet clear.

The rain this week comes during a relatively dry period for the Lehigh Valley. The weather service recorded just over 2 inches of rain so far this month, but most of that rain came from a single day more than two weeks ago. Rainfall this month is tracking more than an inch below normal, according to weather service data.

The U.S. Drought Monitor, which tracks and displays drought conditions throughout the country, showed northern Lehigh and Northampton counties are “abnormally dry,” along with the entirety of both Carbon and Monroe counties.

In addition to the rain this week, forecasters said temperatures will be a bit warmer than normal to start the week. Highs in the low 80s are expected Monday and Tuesday before dropping into the 70s throughout the week.
